Most of you know the trade that stung the most to me last year at the deadline was dealing away Kyle Davies for Octavio Dotel. The worst part about it is that it was a trade I actually predicted about two weeks before the trade was made ... well and the fact that Dotel only pitched in about five games for us.
Well, anyway, a year later, Davies is having a pretty nice season for the Royals.
In 21 starts, Davies is 9-7 with a 4.06 ERA. When adjusting for the league and other factors, that comes out to a 112 ERA+, or the exact same as Jair Jurrjens.
Just thought I'd point that out for everyone that doubted whether or not he had the stuff it took to become a top of the rotation starter. Everyone's pinning the 'ace' label on Jurrjens but we could have two of them right now.
elvanvitar (3/3/09): Hanson has great stuff but I imagine he will be too inconsistent at the major league level to be really good his first year up.
elvanvitar (3/3/09): You're right. Hanson is god. I apologize for offending him.

yeah this trade was pretty dumb. davies has a 3.75 over his last 14 starts.
Not going to lie, I was ecstatic when this trade happened. I was a huge Dotel fan and thought he'd bring us great stability in the short run and what we hoped to be a playoff run, but it didn't pan out and we will pay for it. Looking back it's a bad trade. But then again every trade at we made at the deadline seemed to be what the fans wanted instead of what's best for the organization kind of like the Francoeur situation.

Two things are obvious here: Schuerholz never planned for the future often, and hindsight is 20/20. I told elinvatar in another thread that there had to be some reason that Davies utterly stunk it up his last couple of seasons in Atlanta. Maybe he just didn't have it all together. He goes to Kansas City and poof, he gets his act together.
The only thing I can say for certain is that we will never know if Davies would have gotten his act together in Atlanta by this point and we can argue about that until the cows come home.
I agree with this. This is something that has happened to all of the Atlanta area kids other than Brian McCann.
I think they all worried about showing that they were the best of the bunch, worried too much about being the local boy instead of the baseball player. That's why I think when these guys go somewhere else, their career will blossom. That goes for Francoeur and maybe even Blaine Boyer and Chuck James, as well.

Hell I'm one of JJ's biggest fans but I'm not ready to label him an "Ace" but he's our Ace because he's the best active starter we have.

Davies was lucky to get out of Atlanta as 6 Braves pitchers this year had Doc Andrews operate on them.
