I was looking at the Braves current roster at MLB4u.com and saw that Willie Harris has been invited to Spring Training with the Braves.

Here are his career stats

Not to great but I reacall when he was with the White Sox he was very productive off the bench and could provide some speed the Braves need.

He was signed as a minor league free agent a while back. I don't see how he offers much. He's never been very good. It's almost sad to think that Pete Orr is a better option.

Sad is an understatement. How much money are we wasting on this guy? I hate the thought of this guy stealing even a second of attention away from someone who may actually do something productive, even if it is just during spring training.

We aren't wasting any money. He's nothing more than a AAA roster filler with a non-roster invite to ST.

i know this is really pointless now and hindsight is 20/20 but isn't it funny how players come out of nowhere and prove us all wrong

For sure. He must be happy to be back home. He did change his approach in Spring Training though. Whatever change he made, I'm glad it happened. Without him, we'd be dead right now.

If you look at his at bats as a Brave and his at bats as a WS, (which i know is not easy to find but my friend who's a White Sox fan has a lot of tapes so I decided to sit and watch a few Harris at bats to see what he's changed), but on the Sox he swung a lot like Ichiro and got out on his front foot a lot and tried to use his speed as his biggest advantage. Now he waits back on the ball a lot more and drives it up the middle and to right field aggresively rather than looking for bleeders and soft hits to the infielders to try and beat out the throws.

Calling him our savior would be an injustice on Diaz.

I think you do have to call him our savior. Remember what Diaz was doing when he was pressing to try to take up the slack of Langerhans? I'm not saying Diaz isn't an equal part of our LF production right now, but the emergence of Willie let Diaz relax and settle back in on what he does.

Without Willie Harris, our offense would be dead right now. How long can it last? No telling. With his change of approach we could see the re-brith of Harris, then again he could revert to his career averages starting next week. You never know, but hopefully he keeps it going until we at least find some offense somewhere else.

"IF" we trade Yunel in a trade for a starter, I'd like to see Willie backup Chipper at 3rd vs RHP and give Diaz a few more AB's in LF...

I would like to see something happen (trade for/sign Bradley) to move Harris to the bench and be our left handed backup infielder (Pete Orr).

Well I don't think that had Langerhans stayed in the team the whole season, Diaz would have sucked as long. Diaz already played with him last season when he was already nicknamed "butter bat", also played in Tampa and KC which are recipes for disaster players. I agree that Willie Mays cut him some slack though.
Anyway who cares, we agree that Willie owned us and that's what matters. I hope that he found the good mix in Atlanta. I've always believed that chemistry helps or kills players, not to this point obviously. Props to Bobby too for starting him as soon as he came and showing confidence.

lmao...how far did you have to dig to find this gem.

Its great that Willie is playing so well. Of course its hard to argue against what was being said in the fall/winter. His carreer wasn't very impressive...until now! :D

I'd like to see Willie playing every day...at least until he cools off.

Of course Willie playing every day = Matt Diaz on the bench and I don't like that either.

We do have other lefty options on the bench however. Thor, McCann, and Salty all hit lefty (Salty of course a switch hitter)and all three won't be playing at the same time.

I think playing Willie everyday would lead to disaster. Hitting lefties isn't a strong point of his, and his lack of success against lefties would likely roll over into his overall batting and effect him against right handers too.

I know he only has 14 at bats against lefties, but .286 ain't too shabby.

I also know he's only hit .262 once in his career and hasn't come close to that since so history says this good streak won't last for much longer...but he has been playing very well.

I agree 100%. I think what we are doing right now is the best situation possible because Diaz absolutely kills lefties.

This thread is great everybody knows I'm the biggest harris homer on the board. And 2 see all these people saying he is a waste and all this lets me further know that some people don't trust the braves front office. And to the fact that his avg has been low and that he is hitting lights is great. But once a week u c a put harris on the bench for etc. He is batting 380 plus if he was batting 200 like some brave he would be home watching the games over my house.
