Not like anyone will be surprised by this move, just worth mentioning.

I'm calling by July.

Depends on what happens with Diaz against right handers or how his body holds up to a full work load. If we have to go to a platoon, I'm calling Schafer then. If not, I'm saying September.

What works against Schafer for making a debut before the rosters expand is that he's not even on the 40-man roster, so putting him on it will mean someone gets released.
I guess because Lerew is on the 60-day, we have an extra spot open right now but it's not likely to stay there. Some of these out of options guys could result in the removal of some 40-man guys, but with guys like BJones, Blanco and Anderson already on the 40-man, it seems that Schafer would be 4th on the totem pole unless he's tearing it up at Mississippi.

He can't be a September call-up without having the team purchase his contract from Mississippi (or Richmond) and placing him on the 40 man roster.

Yes, but during September there are bound to be more spots open due to DFA's or 60-day DL people.

The Braves would be more likely to go with veteran players (be it via trade or waivers) who are likely going to be a part of the playoff roster. It all just really depends on where the team stands on August 31.

Since he was technically "optioned to AA Mississippi" today, has the options game begun for him or must be spend time in the major leagues during the regular season for that to begin?

If you're on the 40 man roster, but not the 25 man roster for more than three seasons, then you are out of options and have to clear waivers before you can return to the Minors.

Re-assigned would be the term for Schafer, as it will be with Lillibridge unless he's added to the 40-man. Options cannot start until a player's contract has been purchased and a player's contract hasn't been purchased unless he is on the 40-man roster.
