The Heist, The Feud, and The Assist
By: Brandon Van Hoesen
For some reason, I had the urge to write this weekend so I figured I’d bring my weekly review back from the dead. I’ll start with some baseball and go on to the other two major sports. The most relevant news is the trade that sent Dan Haren to the D-Backs, which creates a very potent rotation for them out West. Hopefully their weak Pythag record from last year comes back to bite them in '08. There were also a couple of big free agents signing in Fukudome (who is basically a more expensive Tad Iguchi) and Rowand (who actually got a pretty fair deal). But the most important news of the week was Willie Harris being DFA'd because he had too much melanin in his skin. Oh yeah, there was something about a Senator doing a releasing a report on Thursday, but that’s been butchered to death. Although I can’t understand why Ed Wade didn’t wait another day before trading for Tejada after which his value would have been cut in half. Maybe for his sake, that short porch in left will replace will make up for the lack of steroids.
In the NFL, we had Petrino quit on his team to join the Razorbacks, I guess Chris Redman has that effect on a coach. I can't blame him for going back to college, but at least finish out the season. The Dolphins finally got off the schneid with a win over the Ravens, who have mailed in the rest of the season after the loss to the Pats. Speaking of which, the Pats played the Jets today in what was supposed be the one of the worst beatings in NFL history, but terrible weather (the Pats weakness) kept the game close. At least we don't have to hear from Mercury Morris this week. Congratulations to Brett Favre, today he passed Dan Marino for most passing yards in a career. Maybe he wasn't crazy when he said in training camp that this was the most talented team he has ever played with.
The big story in the NBA has to be the resurgence of the Celtics and the "big three". And isn't it fitting that Robert McHale, one of the original "big three", traded Garnett to his old friend; Danny Ainge. If they stay healthy, they should be able to coast to the Finals, not even Doc Rivers can screw up with the Eastern Conference all star team. I still like the Spurs to beat them in the Finals though, the Spurs are off to another tremendous start and still no one cares or watches them. They are turning into the Braves circa 1991-2005. Somehow, the Isiah/Dolan fiasco just keeps getting worse. They might be the only two capable of lower public approval rating than Bush/Cheney. I'm sure more and more Knicks fans are joining Keon Clark (http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=3156390) with every passing game.
