The New York Yankees (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/clubhouse?team=nyy) and Jorge Posada (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?statsId=5502) agreed Monday night to a $52.4 million, four-year contract that keeps the catcher off the free-agent market.

Well, that's the Yankees for you.

I agree it isnt a good idea but it did keep him from the Mets who most likely would have given him anything he wanted to get him to play there
Plus he was the best catcher available....

But that would have been hilarious.
36 year old LoDuca and 36 year old Posada on the same team. :D

Loduca is a free agent....which is why they really wanted Posada...
LoDuca will most likely be a Met next season now with Posada off the market

I agree with all above, this is an idiotic deal. Actually, I wish the Mets got him for this type of money as it surely wouldn't have been beneficial to them over the four years.

Ohhhhh, I forgot about that. It's pretty easy to forget about that stuff when it concerns the Mets. I would think that you'd be correct in that prediction, sir. :D

I dont wish they got him....the money doesnt concern teams like the Yanks, Mets, Red Sox...
and Posada would out perform Loduca any day of the week, I wouldnt want to play him 19 games a year....regardless of the money, hes still a great hitter
Im glad they re-signed him it took the best C off the market which is a position the Mets need to fill so Its a win for the Braves sort of

yankees have no choice they have no catcher ready in the farm system i can see why they did this but in the last year of that contract he will be 40 LOL keep it up with your mistakes Yankees.. nice job.

The mistake here is not this contract it is the fact the could have re-signed him before the season for less years and less money.....is the contract to long yes, is it too pricey yes
Was he their best option? Yes

To be honest, Posada wouldn't have signed for less than 4 years, which according to the New York Post was all the Mets offering were 3 years.

There's no way Posada's knees will last as long as his contract. Bad move for the Yanks.

The Mets would be better served by bringing back Castro or trading for a good defensive catcher, like Laird of the Rangers.

Considering Posada has played pretty much every game the past 10 years......this is a very risky move by the Yankees. I strongly suspect he will be moving to first base by the time he is 38-39....His defense has never been that good, and he is going to start breaking down....

I love this deal
1) Yankees are still stupid
2) He won't be a Met

In a year or two he can become their DH or 1B....since he is a good hitter it still will help them and they can go after a younger catcher then....hes a 20+ HR, 80RBI guy cant really ask for much more from your catcher can you?

No, but for 13M a year, I will.

This happens right when I thought the Yankees were about to quit their ridiculous ways and spend money wisely. Nice going, Cashman!

Same here Jsh. Rivera will receive a ridiculous offer for a 38 year old over the next few days, as well. It's somewhat absurd, but then again the Yankees couldn't let Posada cross the city and play for the Mets.
Now the Mets are in a bind about what to do. Their biggest problems, catcher and second base, are very weak right now. They also need some pitching depth, but who doesn't?

Haha!!! To bad we're taking your ace Mutts!!! Only the Mets would want two over-aged pitchers to be their foundation of their staff. Haha fuckers!!!

I think the Posada deal is reasonable for the fact he would have gone to the mets
The Rivera 3/45mill is insane $15 million a year for a closer?

I think the Yankees are becoming much more fiscally responsible, but you have to realize the cost to do buisness there is different. When it comes to Posada, I fully believe he would have received the same or better from the Mets. When it comes to Rivera.......well its time to pay the piper. He has earned his money in his career. I suspect he will still remain one of the top 5-10 relief pitchers in the game over the next three seasons, or he will retire (FYI - Cashman has said he offered 3 years 45 million to Mo).
Until the Yankees can shake off the image that they need to overpay even their own home-grown players (see Jeter's ridiculous contract), they will have to continue to overpay everyone that comes to their team...They have begun the process, but with veterans like Posada and Rivera, the line, "Hey, we are being responsible now....You can take it or leave it...." Well, it just won't cut it. These guys deserve the money for what they have given the Yankees, and I have no problems with them getting it.
One other thought - Posada's season was truly remarkable for a 36 year old catcher who played in virtually every game (and has played in virtually every game for his entire career). I can't fault them for the contract, although I do suspect he will be playing 1b/dhing in the latter half of the deal.

I do appreciate them keeping him off the Mets' hands, too. However, if they had signed him to the same deal that the Stanks just gave him, we'd be singing Minaya's praises when he started breaking down in 09'-10.
Still, they did do a favor for us for the time being. Anyways, it'll be fun to watch the Yanks fall apart just like this year once again when their core breaks down completely in the coming years. :)

The Yankees pitching in the minors and joining their system is much better than the Braves at this point. They have also invested heavily in the draft and international talent for positional players and pitching.....
Yeah they are overspending, but I don't see this team worrying in a few years time.....They could very well have three legitimate aces anchoring their staff (Hughes, Chamberlain, Wang) to go along with whatever vet they bring in....not to mention talented prospects like Kennedy and Horne. The offense might be aging and slowing down a bit, but the pitching should be on the upswing. Consider this: At the end of this offseason, the Yankees will have Mussina (16.25 million), Giambi (18.3 million), Farnsworth (5.75 million), Pavano (10 million), and Abreu (16 million) will all be coming off the books (66.3 million dollars), not to mention Matsui and Damon (13 million apiece) will be entering the last years of there contract.
Let me preface that by saying those are the average numbers for the contract, and there could be more.

Just as I posted last night, Posada and Rivera are both resigning with Daddy George. My how the Yankees overpaid, I never envisioned it being that much for Posada. Way too much for a guy closer to 40 than his prime
