Barry Bonds says he will boycott the baseball Hall of Fame, if the museum displays his record-breaking home run ball, which has been branded with an asterisk. Bonds told MSNBC in an interview that aired Thursday that he is prepared to be a no-show if inducted into the Hall

Didn't Bonds say he doesn't "care" what the owner of the 756 Ball does with the ball? This is another log on the fire of Bonds' hatred for me.

He did say he didnt care, but you know he does....he just doesnt want the HOF to display the ball branded with an asterisk, Im not so sure I want the HOF to display the ball either
This whole era is tainted and will always be known as the steroids era, no need to show the ball off that someone branded
I dislike Bonds and everything about him but I agree with him here, they shouldnt accept that ball now that it has been marked*. Ive been to cooperstown and I think when I go back I dont want to see that ball branded sitting there, Id rather not look at it and ignore Bonds all together

I think it's awesome Marc Ecko branded it with an asterisk personally. It's the Hall of Fame's decision whether or not to accept the ball and yet they still wanted it. Which tells you the majority of Hall of Famers, veterans, and fans know that Bonds' record is tainted.
Bonds said it his damn self. "I unknowingly took steroids." Which I think he knew about it but still, you're a PROFESSIONAL athlete. You should know the ins and outs of everything you put in or on your body.
If Bonds doesn't want to show up that's fine with me. Any baseball event without Bonds is a good event in my mind.

The HOF is really a museum to the history of the game, and it makes no sense for them to attempt to ignore this portion of baseball history or pretend that steroids are not a factor in the game. At the very least they have to acknowledge the opinions of the baseball fans of today. Barry's asterisked ball is the perfect summation of the current state of the game and the suspicion surrounding the steroid era. Personally I think it would be the perfect item for the HOF to use to build a display around to discuss this very issue.
After all, the ball is of marginal display value in the HOF anyway, since it only represents the record-passing home run, not Barry's final homer that sets the eventual record. After all, when you think of Hank Aaron, you think of 755, not 715.

Very well put!

I completely agree. This entire era could have an asterisk by it, and there's nothing better to represent this era than the ball that broke the most revered record in the sport. The part that gets me is his comments about how "you can't give people the freedom to alter history," while really, that's what his and everyone else's steroid use did, was change/rewrite the history books.
Eat a dick, Barry!

The players who took amphetimines did that too. In fact, anyone who cheated in any form for any length of time does that. That's why I don't buy that line.
EDIT: The caveat about this whole thing is that the average fan assumes that with PEDs and cheating, players do what they otherwise would not have done. No one really knows that for sure. Just like we don't know for sure that the Braves would have won the 1991 World Series if Lonnie Smith had scored the first run.

I think that's a plus for the hall of Fame if Bonds isn't in it.

Essentially, he's right. Just about every person views him as the top dog for PED abuse. That's a form of singling out, isn't it?

You can't have it both ways. If you get singled out for being one of the best players ever and setting single-season and career records, you also get that exlusive attention when you do something wrong.
If the President gets a hummer in the Oval Office he's going to get more attention than the random married guy getting one from his secretary, and rightfully so.
Plus, other players who used PEDs haven't broken hallowed records by using them, Barry has. He deserves every last bit of attention/criticism he gets.

I agree. I just said it was a form. I don't agree with Bonds completely. Maybe I should have said that.

I think it should go both ways. Barry Boycotts the Hall then the HOF should just say,"Barry Who?"

After thinking about this, I really think it would be "good for the game" if Bonds does boycott the HOF. He will certainly be a first ballot selection, which sends a lousy message to young athletes everywhere; but if he is chosen AND refuses to show up for induction, that will do two things: first, it will show him to be a total ass and a poor sport; and second, it will place him in the special corner of Hell reserved for tremendously gifted people with no humility.

Agree in total, but I will state right now that there is not a chance in Hell that Bonds would be a no-show at his induction. That man lives for the adulation he will get at that ceremony. No way does he give up the chance to let people publicly sing his praises.
He's just trying to intimidate the HOF and bend them to his will with these comments. Hopefully they will disregard them as so much hot air.

I totally agree with the first part, but i still think that 715 was the bigger homerun for Aaron, it was the record-breaker and the eyes of the entire country were focused on Hank's chase of the Babe. Though Bonds' chase of Aaron's record was hugely controversial, it happened with much the same fanfare and attention. Number 755, when it happened, was just an ordinary homerun, (if there is such a thing) as will Barry Bonds' last be.

There's no way Barry Bonds would boycott the HOF. When he gives his induction speech, I hope he gets egged.

I'm trying to understand how the head on his bobblehead toy doesn't break right off. They must have made the neck out of titanium.
