The Cardinals and general manager Walt Jocketty have "parted ways," a source told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
Assistant general manager John Mozeliak has been named interim GM. It sounds like Jocketty was fired with one year left on his contract, even if it's not going to be termed that way. There are no obvious fits for him right now, but Jocketty won't be out of work for long unless he wants the year off. If anything, this would seem to make it less likely that Tony La Russa will be back in 2008.

After thinking about what you said Josh here are the 3 guys I think STL will put at the top of their list:

1. Giaradi(Young w/ legit manager experience and some history with the Cards)
2. Torre(Do I need to say anything about why STL would want to chose him? The only thing wrong I would see is age.)
3.Pendleton(Like the top 2 he also has some history with the team and if Giaradi replaces Torre in NY then he "MIGHT" be the 2nd best option available.)

He is their third base coach and he played many years for them too. His name was brought up for several teams in the offseason so plenty of people think he is capable of doing the job.

Torre managed in St. Louis before and it wasn't the best of baseball marriages:

Year: G W L WP Finish
1990: 58 24 34 .414 6
1991: 162 84 78 .519 2
1992: 162 83 79 .512 3
1993: 162 87 75 .537 3
1994: 115 53 61 .465 3
1995: 47 20 27 .426 4

Fired midway thru 1995 and went to NY in 1996 the rest is history.

Stone, you just pointed out why Torre is very overrated as a manager. When he hasn't been working with a Yankees sized payroll, he's sucked.

And I agree with atlbrvfan, it's Oquendo's job to turn down.

Good. :D

Torre isn't stupid. When he's fired, he'll go to the booth or into some other LaSorda type role.

I forgot that Torre had been that bad his last time he managed STL...thanks for pointing that out Stone...

It's easy to forget, all of his misgivings elsewhere seemed to have gone by wayside after his "success" in NY. Even his 1982 season with Atlanta he was using the foundation Bobby built. Horner, Murphy, etc

St. Louis is probably going to hire a baby-faced GM that's into sabermetrics

They most definitely will. Paul DePodesta is my guess.

Didn't he use to GM the Dodgers before Coletti?

My guess was David Forst
