The height is okay, but the first thing you have to do is crop the background down to size. You shouldn't have a signature much larger than 450 pixels wide and I typically don't make them larger than 150 pixels tall, either.
Just keep working on layers and things to keep it simple while you're learning. You'll learn most of your stuff through trial and error.
