The Yanks traded Shef to the Tigers for three minor league pitchers, the key being Humberto Sanchez (10-6, 2.63 ERA, 129 K, 47 BB) who grew up in the South Bronx. It doesn't say it in the article, but I heard on the radio that Sheffield also got a 2 year extension.

Cool. The first step in the Tigers demise.

i think its a good move for both teams, the yankees got more pitching help instead of just letting sheff go as a FA and the tigers got the big bat they needed, as long as that wrist is 100%

Is Cashman bribing people to make stupid trades so that he looks good or is this just a reminder of why the Tigers sucked so badly? What a joke. Three good young arms for an angry, rundown, old mouthy slugger, plus giving him a two year extension. I predict that in two seasons the Tigers will be right back at the American League Central's basement, making the Royals look like an actual major league team.

The Yankees picking up Sanchez is good for them, and I think the Tigers are going to wish they didn't do this deal.
New York Gets:
Humberto Sanchez - 23 years old. Combined AA and AAA stats - 123.0IP, 2.63 ERA, 97H, 40R, 36ER, 47BB, 129K.
Kevin Whelan - 22 years old. In 51 games for the Class-A he went 4-1, 27 saves, 2.67 ERA. He limited opposing hitters to a .178 batting average (33-for-185) and held right-handed hitters to a .158 average (18-for-114).
Anthony Claggett - 22 years old. 51 games in Class-A in 2006. 7-2, 14 saves, 0.91 ERA. He held opposing hitters to a .174 batting average (35-for-201).
Detroit Gets:
Gary Sheffield. A very good hitter, but at 37 years old is already showing signs of breaking down. He's basically a lock for .300-30-100 if he can stay on the field, but who knows if he will?Just don't think the Tigers will be too happy with this in a year - though they still have Verlander, Zumaya, Rodney and Tata.

As I said over at OS, this clinches as 95 loss season next year for the Tigers. Nothing like voluntarily slaughtering any chance of having good team chemistry by bringing in this cancer.

I don't understand why they feel they needed to make that trade. They have money, and lots of it. They could have easily made a run at Piazza or a similar player to DH for them without losing that young talent. After trying to accept the fact they made the deal, I don't know what Dombrowski was thinking with that extension. Signing him through 2009? Do they not realize that he turns 38 in just a few days...
