Braves Comeback Bid Comes Up Short

After sweeping the Pittsburgh Pirates to start the run of the bottom feeders of the NL Central in their schedule, the Braves dropped two games to the Cincinnati Reds.

Andruw Jones gave the baseball a ride with two out in the ninth, but fell feet short of hitting a walkoff homer for the Braves. Jones, who had homered an inning prior to get the Braves on the scoreboard, flied out to the edge of the warning track with a runner on to end the game.

Jo-Jo Reyes made his second start for the Braves and much like the first one, his statistical line does not show the type of game he had.

After giving up just two runs over the first six innings, Reyes's start was ruined by the bottom of the Reds order. Reyes recorded just one out in the seventh inning, a sacrifice bunt from Bronson Arroyo, and departed the game with runners on second and third. Peter Moylan entered the game and struck out Ryan Freel, but lost control of the inning when he issued a walk to Jeff Keppinger.

Following the walk to load the bases, Ken Griffey Jr. singled to drive in two runs. Brandon Phillips singled in back of Griffey to drive in two more and give the Reds a 6-0 lead.

Perhaps building some momentum for the series finale, the Braves were able to come up with five runs over the final two innings and force the Reds to go to their closer, who may be unavailable for the final game of the set after pitching in the first two.

Mike Stanton started the eighth inning with two out, but after a single to Chipper Jones, Andruw Jones hit a blast into the left field seats. Brian McCann singled after the homer and Jeff Francoeur walked to extend the inning. Kelly Johnson's two out, two run triple forced Stanton out of the game and brought the Braves within two. After Weathers entered the ballgame, Jarrod Saltalamacchia lined out to the shortstop to end the inning.

In the ninth inning, Chipper Jones again came to the plate with two out in the inning, just as an inning prior. He singled again, this time driving in Edgar Renteria to make the score 6-5 before Andruw Jones's blast fell just short.
