After allowing a homer to the second batter of the game, Carlyle settled in and gave the Braves another excellent start.
Carlyle allowed the homer and a single in the first inning, but used a double play to end the first inning to start a streak of retiring 12 consecutive batters. He allowed a triple to Jose Castillo in the fifth inning to break the streak, but came back to strike out Jack Wilson to end the inning.
Carlyle's outing tied his career high for innings in a game with eight innings. He went eight innings in his last start, as well.
The Braves scored against every pitcher the Pirates had to offer on Sunday. They scored a run to combat the homer in the bottom of the first, as Yunel Escobar scored on a wild pitch to tie the game.
Chris Woodward lead off the fifth inning with a double. Woodward scored as Carlyle attempted to sacrifice him to third, but Castillo overthrew first base. Carlyle advanced to second on the error and later scored the Braves third run on a single by Edgar Renteria.
The Braves tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the seventh and eighth inning. In the seventh inning, a pair of two out walks to Chipper Jones and Andruw Jones came back to haunt Salomon Torres. Jeff Francoeur singled home Chipper Jones to make the score 4-1.
The Braves set the final score in the eighth inning. After Willie Harris reached base with two out in the inning, he stole second and scored on a single by Escobar.
Bob Wickman pitched a perfect ninth to finish the game.
Renteria finished the game 4-for-5.
The Braves have won four straight games, seven of their last eight and 12 of their last 16 games since returning to National League play.
