Kyle Davies closed the first half of the Braves season with a win and re-closed the gap between the first and second spots in the NL East to two games.

Davies, coming off a start that saw him give up five runs in just two innings of work, pitched six inning and gave up just one run on four hits in the Braves 5-4 over the Padres on Sunday. Davies allowed two walks and struck out six batters.

The Braves got the offense started in the second inning. Andruw Jones lead off the inning with a walk and later scored on a homerun by Brian McCann. Kelly Johnson homered later in the inning, giving the Braves a 3-0 lead.

The Padres got on the board in the bottom of the third inning. Davies walked Adrian Gonzalez with two out in the inning. Mike Cameron later doubled to drive in Gonzalez and make the score 3-1.

The Braves chased Greg Maddux from the game in the sixth inning after scoring two more runs. Chipper Jones and Andruw Jones both singled to start the inning. Andruw Jones advanced to second base on an errant throw. Brian McCann followed those two with a single of his own to drive in the Joneses.

Peter Moylan and Rafael Soriano pitched scoreless innings behind Davies. Bob Wickman didn't have the same luck, however.

Wickman entered the game with a four run lead in the ninth inning. He struck out two of the first three batters he faced, but then the trouble started with two out in the inning. Michael Barrett doubled to drive in a run, then scored on a single by Kevin Kouzmanoff. Russell Branyan singled to move Kouzmanoff to second base. Brian Giles singled to drive in Kouzmanoff and make the score 5-4. Wickman finally got Marcus Giles to strike out to end the threat.

The Braves stole three bases against Greg Maddux. Chipper Jones stole one, while Andruw Jones stole two bases.

The Braves will now have to wait until Friday to get back on the field as they wait out the All-Star Break.

Tim Hudson will pitch against Ian Snell and the Pirates when games resume.
