As the Braves offense exploded for seven runs in the fourth and fifth innings, the Braves inched their way closer to the Mets in the divisional race. With their current three game win streak, the Braves have moved to just two games behind the Mets in the NL East standings. Other than being back in the chase for a title, there were a few other things to welcome back in the Braves win on Friday night.

First, welcome back to the starting pitching. The Braves had gone five games since having a starter give them seven innings in a game, though one of those starts was cut short by a lengthy rain delay. Buddy Carlyle pitched a career-high eight innings to give the Braves bullpen a rest and earn the win. He allowed three runs on eight hits while striking out a career-high seven batters.

Second, welcome back to Andruw Jones. After having an eight game hit streak snapped on Thursday, Jones responded by collecting his first multi-hit game since June 9. Jones finished the game by going 2-for-5 with three RBIs. He collected a two-run homer in the fourth inning and an RBI single in the fifth inning.

Jones homer tied the game and started the scoring for the Braves. Kelly Johnson, Jeff Francoeur and Carlyle followed the homer with singles to score another run in the inning to take a 3-2 lead.

After Carlyle struck out the side in the fourth inning on only nine pitches, the Braves offense went to work again in the fifth. Edgar Renteria singled and Chipper Jones reached on a walk before Andruw Jones's single drove in one run. Johnson doubled behind Jones's RBI single to drive in Chipper Jones. Francoeur picked up an RBI of his own with a single to drive in Andruw Jones and Scott Thorman capped the scoring with a sacrifice fly.

Now pitching with a 7-2 lead, Carlyle cruised the rest of the way. He allowed just three more hits, two coming with two out in an inning, before finishing his night after eight innings.

Tyler Yates came in from the bullpen to pitch the ninth for the Braves. Yates allowed a run to score on two hits.

The Braves will play their next game behind the Major League debut of Jo-Jo Reyes, who will start in place of John Smoltz. Reyes had been a combined 10-1 with a 3.08 ERA in the Braves minor leagues this season.
