Through the first three innings, it appeared as if Kyle Davies was on his way to giving the Braves another good start. The fourth inning did him in, however, as the Twins scored five runs in the inning and the Braves never recovered.
Leading 1-0 on a Jeff Francoeur homerun, Davies entered the fourth inning having retired the last nine batters he faced. He got Joe Mauer out to start the inning and then lost his control. After having Michael Cuddyer down in the count 1-2, he lost his control and Cuddyer coaxed a walk. Justin Morneau followed by turning an 0-2 count into a walk. Both runners came around to score on Torii Hunter's double. Hunter then stole third and scored on an errant throw from McCann. The Twins then loaded the bases with two out and plated two more runs with a single from Luis Castillo, giving the Twins a 5-1 lead.
The Braves cut the deficit to two by scoring single runs in the fifth and sixth innings only to see their work disappear in the seventh and eighth innings when the Twins pushed the lead back to four.
The Braves got homeruns from Francoeur and Scott Thorman. Jarrod Saltalamacchia collected the other run batted in and recorded two hits, while Willie Harris had three hits.
The Braves were without Chipper Jones and Edgar Renteria for the first game of the series, but hope to have them both back in the lineup on Wednesday. Renteria was held out of the lineup due to a bruised hand that came from a beaning against the Cubs on Sunday night.
After taking batting practice on Tuesday, Chipper Jones sounded optimistic about returning sooner, rather than later.
"It was to the point where I had to actually keep two hands on the bat to support both thumbs. Now I can let it go and swing free and easy. So I'm encouraged. It's close."
The Braves will take on the Twins again on Wednesday with Chuck James going to the mound against Carlos Silva.
