The Braves got all they could have wanted out of Chuck James on Thursday night. James left the game after pitching seven innings trailing 2-1. It was the second time this year that James has been able to reach the seventh inning, but he was on the losing end as the Braves offense couldn't get anything going agaisnt Cubs' starter Rich Hill.

James allowed single runs in the first and second inning. After Alfonso Soriano singled in a run in the second inning, James sat down the next eleven batters before giving up a bloop single to Matt Murton in the sixth inning.

The Braves scored their lone run in the second inning on a homerun down the right field line by Andruw Jones.

Andruw Jones was the only player to reach second base for the Braves. He homered and also stole second base after a single in the fourth inning.

After the second inning, only one batter reached second base for the Cubs through the rest of the game and that occurred in the seventh inning. Cesar Izturis was sacrificed to second base, but stranded there as James got Felix Pie to ground out to end the inning.

In two starts in Turner Field this season, Hill has thrown sixteen innings and allowed just one run and seven hits.

The good news to take out of the game from a Braves standpoint, James has made vast improvements over his last three starts. Since his May 28 start in Milwaukee, James is 1-1 over three starts. He has pitched six innings or more in each game and allowed, at most, two earned runs. James has pitched 19 innings in these three games, allowing 17 hits and striking out 16. His ERA is a miniscule 2.37 during this time.

The Braves recent struggles have seen the Mets lose four straight games and keep the relatively same lead in the division. As the Mets have lost four straight, the Braves have now dropped three straight and not closing on their 3.5 game deficit in the NL East.

The Braves and Cubs will play again on Friday with Lance Cormier seeking to avenge his last start, also against the Cubs, and get the Braves back in the win column.
