BCS Title Game: LSU vs USC

Phil Steele has LSU as his Preseason #2

Chief Knockahoma

Liberty Bowl: Tennessee vs Southern Mississippi

Phil has Tennessee ranked 25th in his Preseason Poll.

Phil has Tennessee finishing tied for 3rd in the SEC East.

I assume you're talking about Ainge, and if that's the case this is what Phil has to say: "Ainge did suffer a knee injury in the Spring but should be 100% this fall and I expect him to have his best season yet."

tnbravesgirly7

Please tell me he doesn't have Bama ranked above my Vols...

Please tell me he doesn't have Bama ranked above my Vols...

Phil has Alabama slated to go to the Cotton Bowl to play Missouri.

Phil has Alabama at 17th in his Preseason Rankings.

Phil has Alabama finishing 2nd in the SEC West.

Steele has this Saban effect going on. Alabama isn't that good of a team, and Saban won't make them that much better. There's no way Alabama should be ranked that much higher than Arkansas, none!

i agree 100%, Bama is NOT as good as Phil makes them out to be.

note: we will look back at this thread at the end of the season when Bama is undefeated and playing in the SEC Championship and see how stupid we are.

McCarroll21
06-07-2007, 01:45 AM
Well, I'm not going to say Alabama will be bad, and they'll improve a lot under Saban, but not so much this year. He needs more than one year of recruiting to do the job that he wants to do. And I'm not saying Arkansas is great, but they are the defending SEC West Champs, have the Heisman favorite in the backfield and didn't lose TOO much to graduation, draft, etc.

I don't think Arkansas should be ranked ahead of LSU, but they shouldn't be ranked behind Alabama or any other SEC West team right now. The fact that we had so much drama on The Hill is hurting our pre-season ranking. Come October, those who ranked Arkansas this low will be kicking themselves [again, not saying Arkansas should be ranked in the top 15, or even the top 25 at this point either, but we shouldn't be in the mid-50s].

Chief Knockahoma
06-07-2007, 01:53 AM
Arkansas has more than just the #1 Heisman Candidate...they have pretty much the best backfield in the country.

McCarroll21
06-07-2007, 02:01 AM
Yeah, well ... didn't want to go saying a bunch of craziness. I think Felix is just as good as McFadden to be honest, they're different but both are equally effective. We have a few others that go unnoticed too. Peyton Hillis is a great HB/FB/TE combination and Michael Smith is little but can scoot. We also brought in some pretty nice recruits that will likely redshirt and wait for McFadden and Felix to leave.

I also think that people are underestimating Casey Dick at QB and Marcus Monk, London Crawford and Ben Cleveland as receivers. McFadden, Jones and Hillis are golden out of the backfield and could line up wide if needed, too.

Phil has Mississippi State finishing 5th in the SEC West and Ole Miss finishing 6th in the SEC West.

The last line from Phil's Forecast for MSU: "The Bulldogs make my Most Improved List meaning I give them a shot at a bowl in 2007."

Overall Phil has MSU at 63 out of the 119 teams in D1A, Ole Miss is at 65.

I want to see Les win with his own talent before I make a judgement. LSU football team always seems to underachieve. I said last year before te season started LSU had more talent than anybody. But who could LSU get to replace Les if he takes the job in Ann Arbor after this year. (Assuming Carr leaves). The one thing LSU does not have is a LSU grad that is a Frontline HC.

I think it will actually hurt him because we won't be on TV so much.

Had we kept TCU on the schedule, it may be different. We've played Texas and USC the last four years, it was supposed to move to TCU this year but we pushed them back to open up a series with Texas.

We pushed them back a few years because if not, we'd be playing two games in Texas next year. That's where the DI-AA team comes in. They were a late filler.

SEC teams can be forgiven for weak non-conferance schedules, playing inside the SEC is brutal enough.

I agree that Arkansas's tandem of Mcfadden and Jones in one of the best in the country; the only other pair I can think of that can match them is Slaton and White from West Virginia. If you consider the quarterback to be part of the backfield, then Arkansas drops several spots; Casey Dick isn't a very good quarterback IMO. Although I like Monk on the outside.

Yay! Let's turn this thread into Florida vs. LSU. Anyone who actually thinks LSU isn't the most talented team in the country is blinded by their own team affiliation. USC is the only team that can hold a candle to them.

In saying that, anyone who believes that the most talented equals best, is equally as blinded. That is the reason why Arkansas won the West last year in the SEC and Florida won the SEC. Despite the fact that LSU was more talented, they didn't get their talent to gel on the field.

Recapping, if I were an LSU fan, anything less than a National Championship would be a disappointment to me, too. When you enter nearly every season with players on their two-deep roster that are better than a lot of teams first team roster should win each time out.

Now we just have to wait and see if the coaching and talent comes together.

LSU did rock App state in 2005. I cannot believe you could forget that outcome 24-0 (http://www.lsusports.net/fls/5200/assets/docs/fb/05stats/ls08.htm?DB_OEM_ID=5200). This was the lowest point total LSU had ever scored against a DI-AA team. App State went on to win the National Championship that year and again in 2006. Some App players commited on how great LSU experiance was to them. It was a big deal since usally App draws about 16,000 fans at home games and way less on the road. They said that LSU treated them with respect.

App plays Michigan Sept. 1st. Should be our only blemish on our way to a 3-peat.

Here is why we play the "big boys." (http://www.fanblogs.com/michigan/006945.php)

Word from The Charlotte Observer says that Michigan's game this season with the two-time defending NCAA Division I-AA champion Appalachian State will run UM a cool $400,000 - or roughly 20% of AppState's entire football budget. (http://www.charlotteobserver.com/129/story/74765.html)Not that the Wolverine's are crying - they'll likely pull in $4 million for the home game, which makes it win-win for both schools.

Maybe they can take App or GA Southern's place in the Southern Conference when and if they finally move up.

He sure didn't look very good running the ball the one game I actually watched him do it, but I guess that was due to the fact that in that game the opposing D was actually not playing caught off guard every time he tucked it.

I don't think he'll do terribly bad this season having to actually use his arm a lot more often, but I really don't think he'll live up to the hype of being the "Great Tim Tebow" that has been bestowed upon him, either.

McCarroll21

You mean teams weren't caught off guard when he ran the ball to the left every time he was in the game?

I'm not sure how well he'll do, but I don't think Meyer's great scheme will work in the SEC as well as it did at Utah or Bowling Green. Defenses are just too fast and react too well.

That said, he does have better players so you never know, I just wouldn't count on Tebow having an Alex Smith type breakout year or anything.

I hope Ainge breaks out..... He could have an Alex Smith-esque breakout year, thats for sure. He has the physical tools and all but I'm afraid his recieving corps will limit him.

How can a QB who's been starting since he was a freshman (minus when he blew it to Clausen) for one of the SEC East's 3 top teams, arguably by many the toughest division in College Football, and was one of the Conference's top performers a year ago for the majority of the season, going to have a "breakout year" rivaling the QB from a horrible program from one of the weaker conferences in the nation that was so good it propelled him to be the #1 pick in the NFL draft? I just see no correlation in the two scenarios whatsoever.

I'm drooling. Can't wait for the Vols to win the SEC!

How good are they? Answers tonight (http://www.djournal.com/pages/story.asp?ID=249897&pub=1&div=Sports)
Les Miles has seen all of the tapes.
But it’s the last five of 2006 that promptly grab his attention.

It was during that stretch Mississippi State lost by three points to Georgia, Kentucky and Ole Miss, while upsetting Alabama in Tuscaloosa.

And it’s those efforts Miles expects to see today at Scott Field when LSU battles the Bulldogs at 7 p.m. in a game televised by ESPN.

“When you look at their film when they are playing well, you can see very quickly they are capable and talented,” the third-year Tigers coach said.

More than anything, it’s State experience on offense that he’s noticed the most.

Miles says he’s been impressed by quarterback Michael Henig’s decision making and the yardage the running backs collect after initial contact. And he notes with a veteran offensive line returning, coupled with a quality receiving corps, the Bulldogs are another step closer toward turning the corner.

“Watch the film and you can see Mississippi State has a lot of talent,” he said.
Nice words from Les Miles.

Here's to MSU turning the corner tonight!

Henig throws six interceptions in 45-0 LSU rout of MSU (http://www.djournal.com/pages/story.asp?ID=250045&pub=1&div=Sports)
The problem for the junior quarterback wasn't that he could not complete passes. It was that his passes kept landing in the hands of the guys wearing the Purple & Gold.

"It wasn't a good game for Mike," Croom said. "We'll look at the film and see what we need to correct. There's not a lot you can say about that."

Henig has different pain in this opener (http://www.djournal.com/pages/story.asp?ID=250089&pub=1&div=Sports)
One frustrated Bulldog fan asked on a message board if Ole Miss' soon-to-be-tested QB Seth Adams might be available for duty. Another wrote that MSU was "one broken collarbone away from a competitive season."

When you are a 39 point favorite and are lucky to be ahead by 15 late in the game, that's not good.

Also, the Heisman resides in the Ozarks.

Neither of which are in the same league as McFadden. They're very good running backs, don't get me wrong. However, there's not a single back in the country right now that's on McFadden's level.

Even if they do lose this game, I don't think it makes the SEC look bad. They could have just as easily scheduled out of conference cupcakes like some other teams do, but instead they always have a tough schedule. Besides, everyone already knows that the SEC is the best conference in the country anyway. :D

Agree - UT kept it close for awhile (they are drving right now to get within 10), plus, they're playing a really tough team, so I really think the SEC as a whole will look just fine.....

I think he'll make it...he might not win, but I think he's getting enough press right now that by the end of the year he'll have enough stats, a good enough record for his team, and the coverage he needs to get there...The Award is McFadden's to lose though...

Well it looks like the argument about which Georgia Tailback will get more carries is over for now, Kregg Lumpkin broke his thumb yesterday, so Knowshon and Thomas Brown will get all the carries, and worst case Caleb King can be un red shirted. Lumpkin will be back this season sometime though. This isn't really a bad thing because he was the worst of the 3 in my opinion and I love watching Knowshon run :D

Truth there, but McFadden is just one in a long line of good running backs to come through Arkansas lately. The only difference is he's been able to stay healthy and show everyone what he can do on the field.

There's a few coming after him that may make the world forget about McFadden, too.
