In a game that saw the lead seesaw back and forth in the early going, the fifth inning was the final straw.
The Marlins finally broke through to take the lead for good in an awkward fifth inning that saw four runs cross the plate. The inning contained an error by Willie Harris in left field that allowed two runners to take an extra base and a strike out that turned into a bases loaded situation. When Tim Hudson struck out Jeremy Hermida, for what would have been the final out of the inning, the ball went through Brian McCann's legs allowing Hermida to reach base. Aaron Boone followed with a single to drive in two runs, the eventual final margin of victory for the Marlins.
The Braves had some trouble defensively in the second inning too. After Jeff Francoeur played a single into a triple off the bat off Miguel Cabrera, Hermida singled him home in the next at bat. Francoeur also had trouble in the field in the third inning when he bobbled a ground ball that allowed Dan Uggla to score.
The Braves scored single runs in the first, second and fourth innings to retake the lead in each instance, but couldn't repeat the feat after the odd top of the fifth.
The Braves cut the lead to two runs with two out in the ninth inning on a homerun from Edgar Renteria, but couldn't get enough to constitute a rally that would be needed to come back on the Marlins bullpen.
The game was the home debut of middle infield prospect Yunel Escobar, who responded with a four hit game in front of his new fans. Escobar singled twice, doubled and hit his first career homerun. He also scored twice. Escobar is hitting .500 through the first three games of his career.
The Braves and Marlins will play a double header on Tuesday, with the first of the two games starting at 2:35. Buddy Carlyle will go against Sergio Mitre in game one, while John Smoltz will take on Rick Vanden Hurk in game two.
