At one point, Brian McCann felt the worse than anyone in the ballpark. Moments later, he was beaming with joy and getting a collection of high fives and hugs from his teammates.
In the Brewers half of the seventh inning, McCann had a split finger fastball from Tim Hudson slip beneath him and to the backstop, allowing a run to score and giving the Brewers a 2-1 lead. Immediately afterwards, McCann hit a three run double to get the Braves seven run eighth inning started.
Dave Bush started for the Brewers and kept the Braves baffled throughout the afternoon. He allowed a run on a Kelly Johnson homer in the third inning, but the Braves couldn't push another run across against him.
With a 2-1 lead in the eighth inning, the Brewers elected to go to their bullpen that had been dominant all year in this situation. Entering Wednesday's game, the Brewers hadn't lost a game they were leading in the eighth inning or later.
The Braves went through three different pitchers in the seven run eighth inning, with most of the bulk of the damage coming from six consecutive batters reaching base. Johnson and Willie Harris walked to spark the rally and moved up ninety feet on an Edgar Renteria single. McCann then doubled to left center field to drive in all three runs, then scoring a run of his own on an opposite field double from Andruw Jones. Jeff Francoeur followed the doubles with a single, driving in Jones. Francoeur went to third base on a two-out single by Pete Orr and scored on Matt Diaz' single. Johnson came to bat again and drove in Orr with a single into left field to finish off the scoring.
After all was said and done, the Braves turned a 2-1 deficit into a 8-2 lead.
Rafael Soriano retired the first two batters he faced, running his streak of hitless innings to 10 1/3. He allowed a homerun to Prince Feilder to end the streak.
The Braves stole that run back in the ninth inning when Renteria started the inning with a double. He moved to third on a ground out from McCann and scored on a sacrifice fly by Andruw Jones.
Renteria finished the game with four hits, while Johnson picked up three hits in the game.
The Braves will now move to Chicago to take on another slumping team from the National League Central. The first game will get under way at 2:20 with Kyle Davies set to face Carlos Zambrano.
