Davies Roughed Up As Braves Get Swept

The Phillies returned the favor for the three game sweep that started their season off on the wrong foot. Cole Hamels bounced back from a rough outing, while Kyle Davies went the other way -- reverting back to poor outings.

The Phillies used the sweep to propel them over .500 for the first time this season. Not only did they move past it, they now have two games of which to play with. The sweep didn't move them any closer to the Mets as they too won three games this weekend, but it has bunched the National League East standings again.

Though it didn't show in the box score, Davies struggled with his control early. He gave up four runs, via two two-run homers, before getting past the first six batters of the Phillies batting order. He didn't walk a batter in the inning, but his poor location resulted in pitches to hit for the opposing batters, and they did what they were supposed to do with them.

The Braves got a run back on a homer from Jarrod Saltalamacchia in the second inning. The homer was the first of his career, misled into the left field seats.

Andruw Jones kept the Phillies off the scoreboard in the third inning, robbing a homerun off the bat of Greg Dobbs, but couldn't do much about the fifth inning.

The Phillies scored seven runs in the fifth inning off three different pitchers. Kyle Davies allowed four runs in the inning. He got the leadoff man to pop out to start the inning, then gave up a single, a double and an intentional walk before a bases loaded bloop single forced his exit. All three of his runners left on came around to score on the watch of Macay McBride. McBride allowed a single and walked a batter before leaving the game.

Peter Moylan was then summoned from the bullpen. Moylan allowed a run scoring single, a sacrifice fly and a two-run double before finally getting out of the inning with a ground out.

The Braves scored single runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Martin Prado lead off the fifth with a single and scored on a double by Scott Thorman. Andruw Jones homered in the sixth inning.

The Phillies lead 11-3 after six innings before adding two more on Ryan Howard's second homer of the game in the eighth inning.

The Braves tried to mount a rally in the ninth, but had too much deficit to erase. They started the inning with the first five batters reaching base. Thorman doubled, Chris Woodward singled, Kelly Johnson walked, Matt Diaz singled to score Thorman, and Willie Harris singled to drive in Woodward and Johnson. Yoel Hernandez was then brought on in relief and recorded three consecutive outs without allowing another run to cross the plate.

The Braves were swept for the first time this season. They will look to get back on the winning track on Monday as the Braves will go to Milwaukee for the first of a three game set with the Brewers, who are coming off a sweep of their own. Chuck James will take on Chris Capuano in the first game of the series to be played at 2:05.
