Kyle Davies ran his career record to 4-2 and lowered his career ERA against the Mets to 3.75 against the New York Mets after Tuesday night’s gem. He finished the night with eight innings pitched, allowing only one run on six hits and two walks. He struck out three and even found time to hit a homerun of his own.
Davies was going head to head with former rotation mate Jorge Sosa, who had been 3-0 for the Mets, however, the Braves didn’t feel like thy needed to greet him back to Atlanta with warm hearts.
The Braves started the scoring in the second inning as three straight hits plated two runs. After leading off the inning with a double, Brian McCann scored on a double by Jeff Francoeur. Francoeur scored just moments later on an RBI single by Andruw Jones.
The Braves didn’t feel as if two runs were enough so they came right back and scored two more in the third inning. Davies led off the inning with a walk and moved to third base on a double by Kelly Johnson. Edgar Renteria walked to load the bases ahead of a sacrifice fly from Chipper Jones. Davies scored on the sacrifice fly to make the score 3-0. McCann followed Chipper’s RBI with one of his own as he singled in Johnson from second base.
Scott Thorman added the fifth run on a mammoth homerun leading off the fourth inning.
The Mets scored their only run in the fifth inning as Davies allowed consecutive singles to start the inning. After a force out, David Newhan came up with runners on first and third and grounded out to second base. The ball was hit too slow to allow Johnson to turn the double play, so only one out was recorded and the run was allowed to cross making it 5-1 Braves.
With two out in the sixth inning, Davies helped himself by hitting a homerun to straight away center field to set the final score. Andruw Jones and Willie Harris scored in front of him.
Davies left the game after the eighth inning having thrown 109 pitches. He turned the game over to Bob Wickman who allowed two hits and recorded a strikeout in a scoreless ninth inning. The outing was only the second of the month for Wickman.
Batting sixth for the second consecutive game, Andruw Jones went 2-for-3 with a walk. He failed to strike out for the first time since playing the Padres on May 9.
The Braves and Mets will play the second game of the series at 7:35, a game that will see left handers Chuck James and Oliver Perez squaring off.
