Long forgotten are the Braves who had a five game win streak. Since piecing together a five game win streak during series against the Padres and Pirates, the Braves have dropped six of the last eight and are now looking up in the National League East.
After a long and draining double header on Saturday, the Braves and Red Sox were supposed to turn right around to play Sunday afternoon. However, due to rain, the players were forced to sit at the park for an additional two and a half hours before getting the game underway.
The wait didn't sit in well with Tim Hudson, as he struggled to get out of the first inning and never rebounded. Hudson allowed four runs on four hits and a walk in the first inning. The runs were plated on back to back two-out hits for the Red Sox. Jason Varitek drove in three runs with a bases loaded triple and scored on the ensuing single from Eric Hinske.
The Red Sox didn't take long to add to their lead. Dustin Pedroia led off the second inning with a double and later scored on a ground out by David Ortiz for a 5-0 Red Sox lead. They later pushed the lead to 6-0 against Hudson when Kevin Youkilis led off the fifth inning with a homerun. Hudson was removed from the game later in the inning.
The Braves offense started to show through in the sixth inning as the cut the lead to 6-2. Chipper Jones led off the inning with a single and moved to third on a ground rule double by Jeff Francoeur. Matt Diaz singled in Jones for the Braves first run of the game. After Andruw Jones struck out, Brian McCann walked to load the bases for Jarrod Saltalamacchia. After narrowly missing a grand slam on a 3-2 pitch that would have brought the Braves within a run, "Salty" capped off a 10 pitch at bat with a walk and drove in the Braves second run of the inning.
The Braves put the pressure on Jonathan Papelbon in the ninth inning as he entered in a non-save situation. Edgar Renteria hit a one out single to get the inning started. Jeff Francoeur worked the Braves two-out magic and drove in Renteria to make it 6-3 ahead of a Diaz single that brought the tying run to the plate. Andruw Jones struck out to end the threat and the game.
Hudson finished with 4 2/3 innings pitched. He allowed eight hits and six runs in the losing effort. The Braves bullpen pitched 3 1/3 scoreless innings to finish the game. Macay McBride pitched an inning and a third of perfect baseball followed by scoreless innings from Tyler Yates and Rafael Soriano.
Matt Diaz moved into the fifth spot of the order and responded with four hits, all singles, and an RBI. After missing the night game on Saturday, Andruw Jones was dropped to sixth in the order and struck out five times. Andruw has struck out 17 times in the last eight games, collecting only five hits in that span.
The Braves have now dropped their second series in a row and three on the season. They will next play on Tuesday against the New York Mets as they return home from the ten game road trip. Kyle Davies will take on Jorge Sosa in the opener at 7:35.
