Braves, Red Sox Split Double Header

The double header played Saturday in Boston was the true meaning of two different ballgames. In the first game, the Red Sox hammered the Braves pitching staff for four homeruns en route to a 13-3 win. The nightcap was completely different, however, as the Braves turned the table on the Red Sox and hit three homeruns of their own on their way to a 14-0 win. Both teams collected a season high 18 hits in their respective wins.

Game 1:

The Braves used six pitchers in the day’s first contest. Anthony Lerew pitched the first two innings, giving up three runs and two homeruns. Mark Redman, Chad Paronto, and Macay McBride each pitched 1 1/3 innings each. Redman allowed four runs on four hits and two walks, including a grand slam homerun to Mike Lowell. Paronto kept the ball in the park but was charged for five runs – four earned – in the fifth inning. McBride allowed the last homerun of the day, allowing one run on two hits.

Redman was making his first appearance since being activated from the disabled list, while McBride was pitching in his first game since being recalled from Triple-A Richmond.

Only Oscar Villarreal and Peter Moylan pitched scoreless innings for the Braves.

Coco Crisp led off the bottom of the first with a homerun to set the tone for the game. Lerew struggled through the rest of the first, but managed to get out of it with only the one run scoring. His other homerun was given up in the second inning when Kevin Youkilis hit a two-run homer.

Oscar Villarreal pitched around a double and a walk to get through a scoreless third inning before handing the ball to Mark Redman in the fourth.

Redman went through the fourth inning without allowing a base runner, but could only record one out before allowing four hits, four runs and two walks in the fifth inning. He allowed three consecutive singles and the Lowell grand slam before recording an out. He walked the next two batters before being removed from the game.

Paronto was called upon to record the final two outs of the fifth, but before he could make it through the sixth inning he allowed five hits and a walk and saw five runners cross the plate. He allowed three doubles in the inning, contributing to the five runs. He had to be relieved by McBride to get the Braves out of the sixth inning.

The Braves finally got something going against Daisuke Matsuzaka in the seventh inning. Chipper Jones led off the seventh with a double and scored on a single by Jarrod Saltalamacchia. Jeff Francoeur followed the single with a two-run homer on the very next pitch, though at this point the Braves were already down 12-3 and looking toward the nightcap.

Not to be outdone by his predecessors, McBride allowed a homerun in the seventh inning to push the lead to ten.

Game 2:

The Braves used the second game to get their revenge. John Smoltz, pitching for the first time since dislocating his right pinky finger, gave the Braves seven shut out innings, allowing only three hits and a walk, while striking out seven batters.

The Braves got the scoring started early as Chipper Jones homered with two out in the first inning. Matt Diaz added an RBI double in the second inning.

After scoring single runs in the first two innings, the Braves went scoreless for an inning before scoring multiple runs in four consecutive innings. The Braves scored two runs in innings four through six before pushing three runs across in the seventh. They also scored three runs in the ninth inning.

Diaz started the fourth inning scoring with a homerun over the monster in left. Kelly Johnson later drove in a run with a double to center field scoring Willie Harris.

The fifth inning runs came via a Jeff Francoeur double driving home McCann, who reached on a double of his own in the previous at bat. After moving to third on a wild pitch, Francoeur scored on a ground out by Scott Thorman.

Kelly Johnson got back in the act in the sixth and seventh innings with a two run homer. Harris had reached base on a walk and scored ahead of Johnson. Johnson also tripled home Diaz and Saltalamacchia in the seventh inning. Saltalamacchia had doubled to right field to drive in Francoeur before the triple.

The Braves then went scoreless for an inning before adding three more runs in the ninth inning. Harris singled and came around to score on an Alex Cora throwing error. McCann followed the error with a double to score Chris Woodward and Pete Orr.

After Smoltz left the game in the seventh, Bobby Cox awarded the two pitchers that threw scoreless innings in game one with an inning apiece in game two of the double header. Villarreal and Moylan both pitched perfect frames in the eighth and ninth innings, respectively.

Kelly Johnson was a single shy of the cycle. He drove in five runs in the contest. The Braves played without Andruw Jones in the last half of the twinbill.
