Johnson's Error Leads To Big Inning, Nationals Win

Kyle Davies came into the game coming off what may be two of the best consecutive starts he has had in his career, and definitely the best two starts of this season. After Wednesday night, the perception is that he had reverted back to his poor start to the season, but that couldn’t be more wrong.
Davies gave up single runs in the first and fourth innings, an RBI double and homer for Ryan Zimmerman accounted for both. He entered the fifth frame with a two run lead and having only thrown 42 pitches, 33 for strikes. He also had a streak of throwing first pitch strikes to the previous 12 batters and had kept every out on the infield.
In the fifth inning, the infield is what let him down.
After getting Robert Fick for the first out of the fifth, Davies surrendered a single to Ryan Langerhans and then walked his first batter of the game. He then got Christian Guzman to ground into what should have been a force out at second base, but in his haste to turn a double play, Kelly Johnson failed to come up with the ball allowing all runners to be safe. Following what should have been the second out of the inning, Davies got Ronnie Belliard to ground out to shortstop.
The out that should have ended the inning instead allowed a run to cross the plate. After the force out, Davies walked Zimmerman and then gave up a double to Ryan Church that scored three more runs to give the Nationals a 6-4 lead.
Davies was taken out of the game after the Church double, having allowed six runs -- only two earned -- over 4.2 innings. He allowed five hits and walked two batters.
The Braves scored a pair of runs in the first and fourth innings off LeVale Speigner. In the first inning, Andruw Jones hit a double to score Edgar Renteria and Chipper Jones. Renteria had reached on a single up the middle and Chipper reached on a double to right field.
The Braves pushed their lead to 4-1 in the fourth inning on a single by Scott Thorman. Thorman drove in Jeff Francoeur before scoring himself on a single by Willie Harris.
Bob Wickman entered the game for the first time since coming off the DL and pitched a perfect eighth inning for the Braves.
The Braves will try to earn a split of the series on Thursday when Chuck James face off against Matt Chico of the Nationals. The teams will play at 1:05.
