Hudson Strong Again In Braves Win

After failing to go seven innings for the first time this season in his last start, Hudson rebounded and got back to the seventh inning on Tuesday.

Hudson finished the night with seven innings pitched, giving up only three hits and one walk. He struck out four and allowed only one run. He left the game after throwing only 84 pitches.

Hudson carried a perfect game into the fifth inning, where he lost it, the no-hitter and the shut out on a walk and two consecutive singles with two out in the inning.

The Braves started the scoring in the first inning when Edgar Renteria hit the first of his two homeruns. After Willie Harris beat out a throw on a high chopper to the pitcher, Renteria pulled a ball down the right field line for the first two runs of the game.

The Braves added to their lead in the third inning, pushing the lead to 5-0. Kelly Johnson, Harris and Renteria hit consecutive singles to load the bases to start the inning. Andruw Jones blooped a ball into right field that got down scoring Johnson. Brian McCann followed with a sacrifice fly to chase home Harris. After Jeff Francoeur struck out, Scott Thorman hit a single into right field that Renteria scored on.

The Braves came back to match the Nationals after they scored a run in the fifth inning. Renteria hit the second of his two homers in the seventh inning to push the game back to a five run lead at 6-1.

After Hudson left, Mike Gonzalez had a rough time of it. Only topping out at 83 MPH, Gonzalez was hit hard. Nook Logan led off the inning against him with a triple. After Ronnie Belliard popped out, Tony Batista hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Logan. That was the last batter Gonzalez would face.

Rafael Soriano entered the game to record the final four outs and seal the Braves win.

Renteria finished the game going 3-for-5 with two home runs. He drove in and scored three runs apiece.

Injury Report: Before the game, the Braves learned that John Smoltz pinky was doing better and he feels as if he can make his start on Saturday. He said he wouldn't pitch unless he can throw his changeup, but wouldn't know for sure until Wednesday or Thursday. If Smoltz can't make the start, Mark Redman will likely start in his place.

Bob Wickman was activated off the DL before the game. Kevin Barry was sent to Richmond to clear the roster spot.

Chipper Jones thumb and wrists are still bothering him. Bothering him to the point he wants to have an x-ray done to make sure that they are just bruised.

Mike Gonzalez was placed on the DL after the game, though he doesn't have pain in his elbow. Macay McBride was recalled from Richmond to take his place on the roster.

Coming up: The Braves will look to salvage at least a sweep of the series with a win Wednesday night behind Kyle Davies. Davies will face LeVale Speigner at 7:05.
