The week that was for Anthony Lerew. It had its ups and downs for sure. Lerew made his first major league start on Tuesday and pitched well enough to earn another start. He made his second start just three hours away from his hometown on Mother's Day.
One can only hope that Lerew was able to give his mother a present and Mother's Day wishes before he took the mound, because if he was saving his start for that purpose, he didn't accomplish what he set out to do.
Lerew struggled with his control as a result of overthrowing for most of the afternoon, only throwing 38 of his 74 pitches for strikes. Lerew finished the day by giving up five earned runs over 3.2 innings. He allowed seven hits, walked three men and struck out two.
The Pirates had their leadoff man on base to start every inning, five of which came around to score.
As bad as it was in the early going, the Braves were still in the game until an errant throw by Pete Orr on a sacrifice bunt in the fourth inning allowed two runners to score. The error allowed Ian Snell to reach and he scored later in the inning to give the Pirates a 5-0 lead.
The Braves were seemingly right back in the game in the fifth inning when they cut the lead to three runs. Jarrod Saltalamacchia reached base on a walk and moved to second on a single by Matt Diaz. Kelly Johnson singled to center field to score Saltalamacchia and Willie Harris doubled home Diaz, cutting the lead to 5-2.
The Pirates then answered with three runs off Oscar Villarreal in the sixth inning and five runs off Kevin Barry in the seventh and eighth innings. Barry, pitching for the first time since being called up on May 2, allowed three runs in the seventh and two in the eighth to set the final score at 13-2.
The Braves played without Chipper Jones for the second straight day as he rested multiple minor injuries. Edgar Renteria went hitless in the contest, ending his hit streak at 19 games. Willie Harris went 2-for-4 on the day, raising his average to .471 since replacing Ryan Langerhans on the roster.
The Braves will now move a little south to Washington D.C. to take on the suddenly scorching Nationals, winners of three straight games. The Braves will send John Smoltz to the mound on Monday to face Jason Bergmann at 7:05.
