The Phillies had no choice. Ryan Howard's strained left quadriceps has forced the team to place the National League Most Valuable Player on the disabled list.

Though Howard could still potentially hit another pinch-hit grand slam, the team felt the best way to lick the nagging injury is to give Howard a full two weeks of rest. The move is retroactive to May 10, meaning Howard can return to the lineup on May 25.

"We feel that every time he has to perform, he aggrevates it," assistant general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said. "We fully expect him to be 100 percent by the time he's expected to be activated."

Amaro then added the dreaded "but," that "it may be something that he'll have to navigate through the entire season."Man. Great roster management guys. Hold him out of the lineup for about a week. Used him as a pinch hitter twice. He could have been on the DL and been back to where he would be in 15 days, except a few days sooner. Should have either kept him on the bench as a pinch hitter or put him on the DL from the get go. I'm almost positive that no one they call up can make their bench better than it would be with Ryan Howard sitting on it, even if Howard were at 80%.

Hopefully he comes back 100% and with a bang .. not for the Phils of course, but for my fantasy team's sake.

big mistake IMO. The Phils are beginning to show some life. They're going to be tough in the 2nd half.

The Phillies may have life but they're going against two really strong teams. I've said it before and I'll say it again. The Braves and the Mets are going to fight it out for who gets the wild card and who gets the NL East title and it's going to be a fight to the last week of the season.

very true... it just sucks that the Mutts play the Nationals and Marlins for their final 13 games this year

The Gnats and Fish will be tryin to play the spoiler role. Hopefully they manage to do the same thing to the Muts that we did to Clemens and the Astrolls at the end of last season.
