...that with the injury to Smoltz (regardless of how severe) and with the bullpen running out of gas (seems they've been running on nearly empty since the start of the season) that it's time to officially call this the end of the season.
an 8-2 loss (as it seems it will be at 9:47p EST) to the lowly Cubs tells me that we need to start getting some young guys out there playing.
is it possible for us to bring up guys like Jurries or Salty to play for a few games? obviously someone would have to be sent down to make room.

Someone would have to be kicked off the 40 man for each of them to come up right now. I wish they'd bring Lerew back up and at least let him have a go of it in the rotation from here on out.
There's really nothing left to do other than sit back and evaluate how we finish the year.
Things to keep track of now are:
How Tim Hudson, Chuck James, and Kyle Davies finish out the year in the rotation.
How some of the older guys play when there isn't anything on the line (first time for nearly all of them).
Growth of the young pitchers, or possible returning pitchers, in the bullpen - McBride, Devine, Paronto, and Yates.
Evaluate the growth of the young position players - LaRoche, McCann and Francoeur.
Sit back and hope to God that Wickman re-signs.
whats up guysJudging by the sig and avatar, I'm guessing this is Toma? TOMA! What's up man

so at this point we can't make call ups and send downs?

1. Hudson has shown promise lately, Chuck has been amazing, and Kyle is (I assume) still getting used to being back in the majors.
2. It's obvious how Andruw has played so far with nothing on the line. I don't necessarily see many problems with most of them. But again, Andruw still doesn't look like he cares.
3. Still remains to be seen.
4. LaRoche - WOW, McCann - WOW, Francoeur - I still don't know what to think....he's got the talent (as can be seen) but it's like he's struggling to apply himself.
5. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE re-sign Pork and Beans

Hi mccaroll,
When did you get this site?

so at this point we can't make call ups and send downs?Well, we could because I'm positive we aren't at 40 players right now. But neither of them are on the 40-man roster, and I'm assuming we're already at 40 so someone would have to be removed to make room for them.
Hi mccaroll,
When did you get this site?Today is the first full day that it's been up and running.

It's safe to say, yeah, but personally I wouldn't give up hope until we are officially eliminated. After this week, we should get the young guys in. I'm not sure how the whole call-up process works, but getting guys like Saltamacchia would only benefit them, and benefit us for next year and beyond.

I agree. I don't want to give up on the Braves yet, it's just hard when your "ace" has had three straight sub-par outings and appears to be injured.
I'll hold out hope for this team until game #162 (at least for a winning record) but I think tonight marked the "official" end to our run (of playoff appearances).

The end of the run will be more beneficial in 2008 for the Braves than if we had won it again by not putting that great of a team out there like we did in 04 and 05. Maybe this will create some urgency in the eyes of JS and Bobby and put together a better team to enter next season and beyond.
First step ... get over the apparent love affair for one Brian Jordan.

I think I read a quote from him where he said he thought he had 2 or 3 years left. If that's the case, he's probably a lock to at least get a Spring Training invite. :(

I read the same. Knowing him, he'll come out and try to make the team as the backup catcher. He needs to get off his ego trip and see that he doesn't belong anymore. That's why I respect guys like Eddie Perez who can accept going to AA to be a player/coach instead of hurting the major league team by being a useless player that is only there for "leadership."

Two or three years left? Can't we just bring back Julio Franco? At least HE does something.

If only they had walk-on players, maybe we'd have a shot :).
Hey, I'm only 18, and can throw a pretty good football....maybe that can translate to baseball. Can't be worse than McBride or Yates or any of those other bums we have (although Yates has been alright lately).
McCarroll21

Hey! McBride has been nasty lately ... Yates has been effective. But if Ken Ray can go from bagging groceries to making $327K, then I feel like I can go make the club, too.

The way I see it, we can make up some serious ground (if it's gonna happen) these next two weeks. Until the Mets series (on the 26th), we play the Phillies, Marlins, Nationals, and Rockies. If we can get out of those by losing only one game per series, things can be looking up for that last week against the Mets and Astros.
....then I think to myself, why even toy with my emotions like this?

I think of it this way--I'm almost 19 years old. I started watching baseball when I was almost 5. The 1991 World Series was my first baseball memory.
This will most likely be the first year that I've watched baseball where my favorite team hasn't made the playoffs. It's a bitter pill to swallow, that's for sure.
