To say the Braves had control problems on Sunday would be an understatement. Braves pitchers issued thirteen walks to Rockies batters, and hit two others, on Sunday afternoon. As bad as that sounds, the Braves still had a chance to win the game.
Kyle Davies started the game and walked five batters in four innings. Oscar Villarreal followed with a walk in an inning of his own. Peter Moylan walked two men in his two innings, Rafael Soriano also walked one in his lone inning of work. After all that, Bob Wickman still had a save opportunity sitting in front of him in the ninth inning, but he also battled control problems before blowing his second save in as many chances. Wickman walked three batters while only recording two outs. Tyler Yates was the only Braves pitcher to not walk a batter.
The Braves scored the first run of the game in the second inning. Scott Thorman drove a two out homer into the opposite field seats to get the scoring started.
The Rockies came right back in the bottom of the inning scoring four runs off Kyle Davies. Willy Taveras came to the plate with the bases loaded and drove in two runs with a single. Troy Tulowitzki followed with a bases clearing triple to make the score 4-1.
The Braves cut the score to 4-2 in the fourth inning when Thorman singled to drive in Andruw Jones from second base.
The Rockies got the run back when Brad Hawpe homered off Villarreal in the fifth inning to get the lead back to three runs.
The Braves offense came right back in the sixth inning to tie the game at five. Chipper Jones began the inning with a single. Francoeur doubled to set up Thorman with two runners in scoring position. Thorman singled to drive in both runs ahead of a Brayan Pena single that moved Thorman to third base. Ryan Langerhans followed with a sacrifice fly to tie the game.
The Braves took the lead in the eighth inning when Francoeur scored from second on an error by Garrett Atkins. The Braves added another run in the ninth inning as Edgar Renteria drove home Kelly Johnson, who reached on a triple.
Wickman then entered the game with a 7-5 lead. Wickman walked the first two batters before getting Atkins to fly out to left field. He walked the third man of the inning when Helton drew a walk to load the bases. Matt Holliday poked an infield single to the hole between shortstop and third base to score one run, just ahead of an RBI ground out from Brad Hawpe to tie the game. After hitting Chris Iannetta, the Braves turned to Tyler Yates to complete the inning.
The Rockies won the game in the bottom of the eleventh inning on a two-run homer from Matt Holliday. Helton scored ahead of Holliday. Helton was on base after his fifth walk of the game.
Despite the loss, the Braves won the series and will now head back home to face the Philadelphia Phillies on Monday. Tim Hudson will face off against Jon Lieber at 7:05 PM.
