Rotoworld:
According to ESPN, the Braves have signed John Smoltz to a contract extension.
Smoltz is making $8 million this year after having his option picked up. The extension figures to be for one or two years.
Keep looking for stuff that talks about money.

Espn News said it was a 1 year deal with 2 year options.

They said the one year deal is worth 14 mill. He got the big bucks eh?
Great! HOF pitcher to stay with us entire career!

I've seen 13 and 14 million. Not sure what it is, I'll wait for things to be in print from DOB or Bowman before I listen to what ESPN says because they have apparently had two different figures.

Well would be mean they won't be able to sign Andruw?

I think it means Andruw had a chance to negotiate and declined, so instead of losing them both on the market, we locked up one of them.
The latest from ESPN
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2850620As part of the agreement, Smoltz will receive $14 million in 2008. The deal includes a vesting option for the 2009 season that automatically kicks in if Smoltz pitches in at least 200 innings in 2008. There also is a team option for 2010.That means Smoltz will make $6 million more next season than his way below market values in 2005 ($6M), 2006 and 2007 ($8M in each).

Very nice.It would have been one of the worst braves off season in a long time to lose Smoltz and AJ.So at list we won't lose smoltz .Now if AJ keep playing like he is playing right now maybe he will accept a trade.Btw can you have a sign and trade in baseball?

What do you mean by sign and trade?

Umm... I'm not sure what the latest CBA did to it, but usually if you sign a contract you can't be traded until a certain date.
If you're talking about Andruw's situation, he would have like a 72 hour window to be able to work out a deal with the team we trade him to before accepting the trade. Randy Johnson's trade this off-season is an example of such.

Because it's hard to get value for Andruw Jones that you would want. He has to accept it and if he doesn't want to be traded it would sour the relationship between he and JS for any possible contract talks.
Also, just an FYI... Braves.com and AJC.com says no finances were disclosed.

John Smoltz will have the opportunity to realize his dream of playing his entire Major League career with the Braves.
Late Thursday evening, the Braves announced that they had signed Smoltz to a contract extension that could keep him in Atlanta through the end of the 2010 season. Financial details have yet to be confirmed.
Smoltz, who could have become a free agent after this season, will have a guaranteed contract for the 2008 season. There will be a vesting option for 2009, and a club option for 2010.
Only thing really confirmed is the extension and option years.

good news for sure, i cant imagine the braves without smoltz, but that is a huge chunk of payroll, hopefully the 09 option is worth less than 14M

I actually think that these means the Braves have more money to offer AJ than people think, b/c if we are going to give Smoltz this big of increase JS knows he has the money to make a decent offer to AJ.

Or it means that JS is using (what would be) AJ's money on Smoltz. This pretty much guarantees that AJ won't be on the Braves in '08. :(

Awesome news.
And Andruw was never going to be back so it doesn't matter what Smoltz gets. I'm surprised it's for 14 million a year but he would probably have gotten that or more on the open market.

Yes. This is basically JS's way of doing his job, thanking John for playing for MUCH less than market value for the previous three years, and starting the process on the Post-Andruw Era.

Braves signed RHP Josh Smoltz to a one-year contract extension with club options for 2009 and 2010.
Smoltz will earn $14 million next year. A $12 million option for 2009 becomes guaranteed with 200 innings in 2008, and there's another option for 2010 worth $13 million if he pitches 200 innings in '09 or $12 million if he falls short of that total.

With Gil Meche making $11M/year, we should consider ourselves lucky.

In DOB's blog he says something interesting...Part of the expected Hampton insurance payment .... is probably going to pay the signing bonus to Smoltz this year; part of Smoltz’s $14 mill salary in 2008 is coming in the form of a signing bonus this year.So it may not be much payroll relief, but Smoltz isn't going to cost us the full $14M next season.
