Braves Rally Comes Up Short

Timely hitting almost saved erratic pitching in the first game of a three game set against the Marlins, but the comeback attempt came up one run short.
Kyle Davies put the Braves behind by giving up five runs over four innings. As it was in Spring Training and late last year, Davies main problem was his control. He allowed six hits in his four innings, but ran into trouble with the six walks he issued, along with hitting a batter.
The Braves got on the board first in the first inning. Edgar Renteria singled with one out. Chipper Jones followed that with a single into right field, allowing Renteria to move to third base. Andruw Jones followed Chipper with a single of his own, scoring Renteria.
The Marlins bounced right back in their half of the inning, however. Hanley Ramirez led off their inning by being hit by a pitch. Davies control immediately came back to bite him when Dan Uggla doubled in the next at bat chasing home Ramirez to tie the game. After getting Miguel Cabrera to ground out, Davies walked Josh Willingham. Davies seemed to be out of trouble when the Braves got Uggla out at home for the second out of the inning, but Aaron Boone followed the play with a single to score Willingham.
The Braves tied the game in the third inning when Chipper Jones tripled with one out in the inning. Andruw Jones was walked on four straight pitches after that, ahead of an RBI single from Jeff Francoeur.
After the first inning, Davies pitched in and out of trouble without allowing another run until the fifth inning. Davies started the fifth inning and couldn’t retire a batter. He walked the lead off man, and then allowed a single to Boone to set up runners at first and third. Miguel Olivo followed them with a home run to put the Marlins back on top 5-2. That was the end of Kyle Davies night as he was then relieved by Oscar Villarreal.
Villarreal didn’t fare much better. He allowed a one out triple to Dontrelle Willis, then a single to Ramirez to score Willis. Uggla followed Ramirez’ RBI single with a two-run homer to give the Marlins an 8-2 lead after five innings.
The Braves comeback effort started in the sixth inning as Francoeur led off the inning with a homer, cutting the lead to five. They collected two more runs in the seventh inning. Chris Woodward hit a single to start the rally, followed by a walk to Edgar Renteria. After a walk to Chipper Jones loaded the bases, Andruw Jones hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Woodward. Francoeur followed with a single that chased home Renteria, cutting the lead to three runs.
The Braves weren’t done there. After getting two out in the ninth inning, Chipper Jones homered to make the score 8-6. Andruw Jones hit a double to get another runner in scoring position. Francoeur followed that hit with a double of his own to make the score 8-7. In his only at bat of the game, Brian McCann struck out with a full count on him to end the game.
Francoeur finished the night going four-for-five with four RBI in the game. Chipper Jones was three-for-four with an RBI and two runs scored. Andruw Jones continued his recent streak of hot hitting by two-for-three with two RBI.
The Braves will play the Marlins again on Tuesday night. Mark Redman is set to take on Rick Vanden Hurk at 7:05 PM.
