After a quiet night on the previous night, the Mets’ offense woke up in time for Saturday’s game. The Mets matched the seven runs the Braves scored the night before to even up the series, leading up to the all important third game on Sunday.
Jose Reyes started the bottom of the first inning with a bunt single and moved to second on a throwing error by Chuck James. Reyes moved to third on a fly out from David Wright before scoring the game’s first run on a double from Carlos Beltran.
The Mets added another run in the third inning when Carlos Beltran hit another double to lead off the inning. He was moved to third on a fly ball off the bat of Carlos Delgado. Beltran scored when Andruw Jones left his feet to make a diving catch off the bat of Moises Alou, but the dive made him unable to get up and make a good throw home.
The Braves blew a chance to get a run back in their half of the fifth inning. Brian McCann led off the inning with a double, but was stranded there when the Braves couldn’t move him along. Matt Diaz followed McCann’s double with a shallow fly ball to right field that was not deep enough to move the runner. Craig Wilson followed Diaz with a strike out and James ended the inning after flying out to left field.
The wasted chance came back to hurt the Braves as the Mets came right back with two more runs in their part of the fifth inning. Beltran led off the inning with a single to center and later scored on a home run by Ramon Castro, making the score 4-0 after five innings.
The Braves started chipping away at the score in the sixth inning, however. Edgar Renteria hit a one out single into left center field ahead of a Chipper Jones single. With runners on first and second, Andruw Jones doubled into left field allowing Renteria to score. Jeff Francoeur was unable to get another run in as he fouled out to the catcher with two runners in scoring position. McCann ended the inning with a ground out to second.
The momentum didn’t last long as the Mets took back control immediately. Damion Easley led off the Mets’ sixth inning with a home run. Reyes hit a home run of his own two batters later. After a pitching change, David Wright drew a walk and scored on a Carlos Beltran triple.
The Braves were finally able to chase Perez from the game in the seventh inning after Chris Woodward drove in Wilson, who reached base on a double to deep left field. The Braves loaded the bases after that, only to see Andruw Jones strike out to end the inning, leaving the score 7-2 in favor of the Mets.
The two teams will get back after it on Sunday in the rubber game of the series. This game promises to be a good one as John Smoltz and Tom Glavine are the scheduled starters. The game will start at 1:10 and can be seen on TBS.
