On a night that Mark Redman gives up two runs over seven innings, the Braves should win. That was no the case Thursday night however, as the Braves ran into a one of the more dominant pitchers in the game right now.

Redman entered the game with a 12.96 ERA after lasting only 8.1 innings in his two previous starts. He pitched his best game of the season, by far, Thursday, but it wasn’t enough.

Over the first seven innings of the game, Redman gave up just two runs, two solo home runs from Michael Barrett and Aramis Ramirez. He was sent back out for the eighth inning where he gave up another run as Mark DeRosa doubled home Ryan Theriot to give the Cubs a 3-0 lead. Redman then exited the game after pitching seven and one-third innings, giving up the three runs.

As good as Redman was, Cubs starter Rich Hill was better. Hill shut out the Braves over eight innings before giving way to Ryan Dempster for the save. Hill allowed only four hits in the game and struck out seven Braves. He didn’t allow the Braves to string hits together and became even tougher when there were runners on base.

The lone Braves offensive hero of the night was Kelly Johnson. He was two-for-three with a double and a walk. Johnson has eight hits in his last twelve at bats, with two walks thrown in. He has raised his batting average from .150 to .269 in that time. He now has a .397 on-base percentage to go along with his ever rising batting average.

Thursday’s loss means Braves have split their last three series, but they have yet to drop a series on the young season. The Braves will now head to New York to face the Mets for a three game series to determine first place in the NL East. The series will start a ten day, nine game road trip for the Braves before coming home to face the Phillies on April 30.

The MRI on Mike Gonzalez elbow found nothing wrong. It was more of a precautionary type of thing to help him feel more at ease about himself. He has been cleared and may be ready to pitch as soon as this weekend in New York.

Tim Hudson will pitch Friday night for the Braves, facing off against Mike Pelfrey. The game will air on TBS at 7:10.
