supposedly Indians #2 option for 2B after Belliard, nothing really in the article. maybe we could get Blake for him, Sowers if we're lucky. If wegot Blake, he could play LF, or it could free us up to deal Andruw, move Jeff to CF, and have Blake in RF.

Wow. It says we may non-tender him. I would bet against that happening.
I hope we would rather trade him than non-tender him. However, I wouldn't be surprised if that were to happen.

what does "non-tender" mean? i assume it just means letting him go? do we get any kind of reward for this?
From what I gather it means we dont offer him a contract and he becomes a free agent.
do we get any kind of reward for this?
Yeah, we wont have to pay him.

why would we do that? the Braves will at least offer him something, even if its something we know he wont take.

Any chance we could get the "great" Andy Marte back in return?

The problem is, with arbitration, you can't just offer something even if you know they won't accept. In arbitration, both the player and the club submit figures to an arbitrator, who picked one or the other. There would be no compromise. This is called "Final Offer Arbitration."
So, we could offer something but if we enter arbirtration with him, Giles could shoot for the moon and win and us being stuck with him another year. That is why you see so many players sign one year contracts before they're eligible for FA. It's usually a compromise of the two figures before arbitration.
I don't think we'll have to worry about the arbitration/non-tender thing though. He'll be traded somewhere, the only 2B out there in FA is Belliard, unless you count Soriano but he's going to ask for more than $12M a year.

Non-tendering Giles would be beyond idiotic.

Yeah trade him so we cry when we see him batting .310 back in his 2nd spot in some other team.

I'm torn. I don't want to pay him over 5 million when we're strapped for cash and his average has been declining (3 years in a row now). I think he would give us about what Renteria does if he were hitting 2nd, but if Renteria is traded ... who plays SS?
We have options at 2B, but we would have to rush Escobar to the show if we traded Renteria. They'll be about the same price, give us about the same production from the same spot in the lineup, but one will leave us with a bigger hole than the other.
I agree that it's a toss up as far as who'll provide better production between Giles and Renteria, and although I'm a fan of both, I can't help but admire Giles hustle. That little guy plays with heart.

I agree, and if he played SS or Aybar and/or Prado could play SS adequately, this would all be moot. But he can't, and it will be sad to see him go, but it is looking like something that needs to happen before we are pretty much forced to spend $5+ million for him to bat leadoff again.

I think we would either sign Counsell, or see what Lugo would take. If we couldn't get those guys, have a ST position battle between Escobar (if he's ready), Aybar (if he can handle it defensively) and TPJ (if all else fails/he hits well). Giles could try out there. The reasons I'd rather deal Edgar are as follows:
Giles is younger
Giles could probably be better under the right circumstances
Renteria is likely viewed as more valuable to other teams (we may be able to net a good #2-#3 starter in return)
Renteria SUCKED last year after the all-star break (.264/.318/.404)

I agree with you Vuchato ... Giles does have more potential when he's at his best. His early power numbers prove it. Id like to keep both though.
Of course unless someone makes an offer we cant refuse. :) ... but IMHO, we should go in other directions to improve our team.

Too bad Hernandez was claimed. Apparently, he's a HOF SS. We could have traded Renteria, kept Giles, and played Hernandez.

Well at least we still have Pena Jr.
Hernandez rivals Visquel .. but Pena is going to PWN Cal Ripken Jr
