Viera, Fla. — Given a choice of John Smoltz going against New York on Thursday or today against a Philadelphia team he'll face opening day, the Mets made sense. A late change was made and Smoltz pitched Thursday, limiting the Mets to one run and seven hits in six innings of a 7-1 Braves win before the largest crowd (11,591) in 10 spring trainings at Wide World of Sports. The Braves assured the win for Smoltz with five runs off closer Billy Wagner in the seventh, including a three-run homer by surging infielder Tony Pena Jr.
