Diaz injured: Matt Diaz was forced to leave Sunday afternoon's split-squad game against the Reds in Sarasota with an injured left shoulder. He suffered the injury while diving to catch a ball in left field.
The Braves' medical staff doesn't believe that Diaz suffered any sort of separation. He'll be further evaluated on Monday.
Diaz, who is hitting .216 (8-for-37), is competing for playing time in left field. His competitor, Ryan Langerhans, is hitting .378 (14-for-37).
------
I hope it's nothing serious, but Diaz has done nothing to "prove" he should be the starter. He may not have played his way out of a lot of playing time, but Langerhans has been batting 3-5 during the days that the "stars" aren't playing. Makes you think of last year when he was hitting 3rd when Chipper was out.

No biggie. I'm indifferent towards Diaz, especially when Langerhans is a fine defender and a capable player who's shown he knows the strike zone.

I've always been a big Langer fan. I don't have a problem with Diaz but I would love it if Langer could take a step forward and become a solid full-time player. If he could develop a reliable bat we would be all set with Andruw's defensive replacement once he leaves.

he has had a lot of awkward slides out there so this isnt really very surprising, hopefully he learns to be more graceful in time

Yeah I definately want to see Langerhans succeed and be an everyday player for us...hope Diaz gets better fast but I want to see Langerhans take the starting job and play god enough not to give it away

I guess Chief is crying somewhere, thus not responding yet. Chief ... where are you?!?!

Chief is probably coming to his senses and making a huge Langerhans signature!

Time to dig into my collection of signatures and once again present:

I'm a big Matt Diaz fan, and I hope he gets better quickly. I'd rather him than Langy, even though I'm a Langy fan, but I'm more of a Diaz fan.

Diaz does not provide anything with the bat that Langerhans can't match while also playing excelent defense.
That is, unless you expect him to hit .330 again...

those are some harsh signatures KB. no one is going to be the starter, its going to be a platoon thing again

He did that last year. Since when do ST stats matter ?

I guess since the guy he's in competition with has a much better glove, was hurt most of last year and is hitting like .500 this spring (okay, .378 with a .439 OBP).

Injured again before today's game against the Astros...
weird injury...he was leaning on the batting cage and Andruw hit a foul ball and the netting had some give and hit him in the face, chipping one of his teeth. he was originally going to play today, but they pulled him from the lineup and are getting his tooth worked on.

not exactly
from DOB blog
Matt Diaz looks like a hockey player. And that’s not good. Diaz lost part a top front tooth this morning during batting practice when he leaned down to pick up the weighted bat donut and Chris Woodward accidentally hit him in the face with a bat as Woodward was loosening up.
“Woody, that’s the hardest hit you’ve had all spring,” cracked Craig Wilson.
When I mentioned to Diaz that he looked like a hockey player now, he said, “I don’t even like hockey.”
“You really look like you’re from Lakeland now,” another Brave joked to Diaz.
He was knocked to the ground by the impact, but got up and finished his round of batting practice as teammates and others looked for the bottom half of his damaged tooth, though it was doubtful that anything could be done with it.
The piece of tooth was found, and Diaz was scratched from the lineup and taken to his regular dentist an hour or so away in Lakeland, Fla.
You folks on the blogosphere tell me, someone who knows: Wouldn’t he have to get a cap for that? I doubt Bobby Cox’s good-natured suggestion _ “Super Glue” _ would do the trick.
BTW Wilson deserves a spot just for the bolded line :D
