Friday is the day. If not Friday, Saturday.

In short: Big doings are afoot in Fayetteville.

There's a reason for the special University of Arkansas Board of Trustees meeting in Fayetteville Saturday morning and it's not because an emergency attaches to a handful of property transactions.

The executive session slotted on the agenda is not listed as a matter of routine. Here's the deal:

There is now a growing consensus -- among administration, major donors, Board of Trustees -- that it is time for Frank Broyles, 82, to retire as athletic director at the University of Arkansas.

In recognition for his meritorious service, it is hoped that Broyles will choose to exit in a way most favorable to him. By Friday, he must announce that he is retiring by the end of 2007, when he will have served a full 50 years at the University of Arkansas. He'd then move into a university role, likely at his current pay level, such as goodwill ambassador or fund-raiser. A proper search for a successor could be conducted while Broyles continues to serve out his time as a functioning athletic director.

-----

So after 50 years with the University in some role [coach or AD], Frank is either going to retire or forced to leave.

This doesn't bode well for Houston Nutt or Stan Heath. By September, we could have a new AD and a new basketball coach, by this time next year, we could have a new football coach.

The only jobs relatively safe on The Hill are those of Dave Van Horn [baseball] and John McDonnell [track].

All I have to say to this is, it's about time!

I like Houston. I like him even more after he came out and called out a local newspaper writer who has been bashing him for years on a radio show this past week. I will be sad to see him go.

I hate Heath. I think the only reason he was hired is because Nolan played the race card on his departure and Broyles hired a black coach to cover his ass. Heath is 6-41 on the road in the SEC since he became coach. Not acceptable. Arkansas is supposed to be in the NCAA's every year, being a title contender, not trying to survive and sneak out with a victory at Ole Miss, South Carolina and Mississippi State [lost at all three this year].

Oh happy days!
