View Full Version : Braves tender offers to Moylan and Logan
Atlanta tendered offers to relievers Peter Moylan and Boone Logan (http://blogs.ajc.com/atlanta-braves-blog/2009/12/09/in-frigid-indy-braves-look-to-deal-pitcher-or-two/comment-page-41/#comment-364343).
We could've saved 200-400K by just giving Gomez Logan's spot. But that is just knit-picking at this point.

More good news with Moylan. Barring a few battles in Spring Training, our bullpen is pretty much set.

Logan will probably make $500K or so. He shouldn't get much of a raise. He made $427,500 a year ago.
I've got Moylan estimated at $1.25 million, but that may be a little high (those are my intentions, to estimate on the high end). He made $410,000 last year.

They may work out a split contract with Logan. I don't see him starting with the Atlanta team. The bullpen is too deep to carry him around like they did last year where he pitched once every three weeks.

Wagner, Moylan, O'Flaherty, Saito, and Medlen are the locks to be in the pen, it should be entertaining to see who gets the other 2 spots.

Frank has done a good job with the bullpen this off-season. We've got a lot of options. A lot of guys should step in and help this year. After the Moylan and Logan moves we're set.

Surprised on Logan. Thought he was going to be non tendered. Moylan is obviously a no brainer.

A might isn't a lock.

Same. I guess the thought is that it wouldn't be that expensive through arby and he's still got options so there's no need in letting him go.

A might isn't a lock.OK. Then a will add Chavez to that locks list. He doesn't need any minor-leauge seasoning.

Agreed...another name that's very possible to crack the pen with a decent enough spring is probably Luis Valdez after his impressive DL stats....14 IP 8 H 14 K? or something along that lines...

Jesse Chavez being here sends him back to Gwinnett.

you don't think they'll take both, with no clear lock for the final spot? I mean if we go with Hyde or someone other LH then I'd agree...

The final guy will either be Logan or a long man. Valdez isn't that.

well either way with Bobby he should get another shot at some point in 2010...

With our Triple-A team being so close, there should be a spot in the pen designated to be that guy that pitches a shitload of innings and then just swap him out the next day for a fresh arm.
That's how TLR uses his pen.

Don't know if he will be ready in April, but at some point don't forget about Scott Proctor.

weren't they going to start using Reyes as a long reliever before his injury?

I don't remember, but I wouldn't be a fan of that. I like for my long reliever to have groundball tendencies, or at least the ability to get outs.

Does Boone Logan have any options left?

I would assume so or else we would have non-tendered him.

How high can Moylan's salary go this year? How many arbitration years does he have left?

It can go as high as his agent can convince the arbiter. And this is his first year of arbitration, so he'll have two more after this.

Wren should try to lock Moylan up at least through his arbitration years. He'd definitely be worth it. Once the financial situation allows it I should say.

Not saying it won't happen, but don't forget that Moylan(along with Yunel) is represented by the Wesserman Group....

Oh yea, forgot about that.
I wouldn't lock Moylan up through his arb years. Relievers are very fickle and Bobby has ridden Moylan really hard over his Braves career.

I was thinking the same thing. I mean I love what Moylan brings to the table, ground balls and good innings. However, to bank on that arm which has not only had TJ (which isn't that big of a deal these days) but has 90 and 73 innings pitched his last two full years, respectively, seems a bit too risky.

Fun Moylan fact: he didn't give up a single home run last year.

Really? That's a pretty nice stat to have IMO.
I wouldn't want to lock up Moylan, as others have stated for the same exact reasons. If we could extend Yunel I would but that's a different topic.
Does anyone know why we tendered a contract to Logan? Wouldn't it have been possible to just non-tender him and see if he'd be willing to sign a minor league deal and make the major league portion larger than what he made last year. Like a split deal I guess, he'd get the pro-rated portion of the agreed upon salary?

He can get a split deal through arbitration. Plus if we non-tender him we run the chance of losing him. Not that its that big of a deal, but LOOGY's are really valuable and the more you can hoard, the better.

My bad, didn't know you can work out a split deal through arby...thought it had to be a guaranteed ML deal, my mistake thx for clearing it up.

The fact is even funner when you pair it with this one: Moylan was second in the majors with 87 appearances in 2009. That is impressive.

Lord . Peter Moylan has some kind of sinker, I think his command will be better this year as well.

bad idea to lock up moylan till he proves he can do better vs left handers..... right-handed oba - .271, while his left handed oba was .436

I believe those number are inflated due to his first half struggles. In the second half we saw a more established Eric O'Flaherty and Mike Gonzalez in a set-up role, which limited Moylan's chances against lefties. He was also more effective against lefties in 2007, but admittedly he did struggle against them somewhat then too.

If Moylan's arm stays connected to his body, we'll be fine. :D

Theres only one more year of Bobby riding Moylan's arm the way he has the last two years, so, let's see if Moylan can keep his arm connected for this season.
