1. John Schuerholz, Braves
On the job since … October 1990
Playoff appearances: 14
The peerless GM running the peerless organization, so there's really no argument here. Schuerholz has, of course, won consistently and convincingly, and he's also managed to maintain a generally strong farm system over the years.

Some on here may agree, some my disagree.
The rest of his list is solid with Jocketty (StL), Ryan (MIN), Beane (OAK), and Epstein (BOS) rounding out the top 5.
The more important thing here is that we're getting love from Dayn Perry. When that happens, you just have to stop the day and think about if the Earth is still on it's axis.

Those top 4 are all very good and in any order I wouldn't complain, but i have a big problem with epstein being up there at #5. All he has done is trade away minor leaguer after minor leaguer. Ex-Red Sox players made up about half of the NL All Star Team last year. The only thing that has saved his job was signing Ortiz and Schilling.

How could anybody disagree with Schuerholz? He puts the Braves in a position to win every year! What more can he do?

To Epstein's defense, the Renteria trade was not on his watch. He was very public about the fact that he wouldn't have traded Renteria.
I think Theo is one of the rare GMs with a lot of money available that could be good without the money.

O there are plenty of people who disagree with that on this site (just ask Falcon Pride). As far as Theo goes I dont know if he should be in the top 5. While he is definitely a very talented and young GM that could one day be the best GM in baseball I wouldnt put him there yet. Also I just have a hard time saying GM for teams like the Yankees and Red Sox are the best. If you gave $200 million + to just about anybody I bet they could put together a good baseball team.

Over at CN he gets very little respect. Some feel he was assisted by an overly healthy payroll over the years and that his performance hasn't been as solid with a lower payroll. Others feel that he has traded away too much young pitching, and failed to keep the farm system as stocked as it used to be. Some also feel he puts too much faith in aging veterans and reclamation projects.
I think he has been a great GM. Some of his deals have turned out to be questionable in retrospect, but most looked like sound reasoning at the time he made the deal. He has had some troubles in the past few years transitioning the team from a high payroll to a medium one, but I'm sure most GM's would have the same difficulties. Overall though, he's done a great job.
However, that Sturtze deal is still a head-scratcher.

He's done a much better job this season than previous ones working with the payroll. I think he'll adjust given time, but the question is how much longer will he hang around to work on that adjustment time.

I wonder about that as well. He obviously wasn't planning on retiring soon enough to keep Dayton Moore around.

I think they're working on a JS and Bobby robot pair so that we can have them forever.
That's really where all the money has gone. :D

Awww, thanks for remembering me.
I don't think he is that good. I think Bobby Cox makes a lot of Schuerholz's mistakes or overlooks go away because he is an outstanding manager during the season. Schuerholz isn't a bad GM, just not the great one people make him out to be. I think there is just precious little that seperates him from others. I would put Terry Ryan at the top myself.
By the way, on ESPN, it ranks him at # 2, behind Terry Ryan.
