View Full Version : Salary Cap in the MLB

The salary cap in the NFL is a great equalizer and makes it a very competitive league. With the Yankees gearing up for a 300 million dollar payroll, what do you guys feel about a salary cap? I'm thinking something like 140$ million which doesn't limit any one besides the Red Sox and the Yankees. It almost isn't fair.

the players union will never allow it

How can the MLB players union really justify not having a salary cap when every other major sports league has one?

I wish... baseball is the only sport without a cap. The spending has gotten to the point where only teams that can get a big free agent are the big market teams.
So the Yankees got CC and might get Burnett then they are going for Lowe. Next season Lackey and Holiday.. Teams can't compete in the free agent market its not fair.
Yeah everyone is going to say but spending all that money doesn't mean a championship true but it doesn't allow other teams in the free agent game which is not a fair playing field.

If this was proposed, the players would strike. They love these big market teams even though they may not want to play for one. It enhances their salaries and gives them the ability to feed their kids.

The MLB Player's Union is way too powerful for this to happen. The Player's live high off the hog from teams like the Yankees. The heads of the player's union are highly qualified attorneys, some of the best in the country. To boot, MLB has been very profitable for a long time and the players union is more advanced. Couple that with a weak commissioner and this will not change for a long while. The ML's must experience a significant loss in profit, like the NFL had before the salary cap. They wanted to keep fanbases, but the problem with baseball is there is so much history with the franchises that MLB doesn't have to do that.

I can't wait for the Yankees to field a 500 million dollar team......
It'll probably be in 2 years
We need a salary cap in College Football first. Reggie Bush got paid too much.

Soon enough, the Yankees will just start buying teams and making them the new NY farm team.

I will be able to feed myself, my wife and 2 kids on a government paycheck. They are just greedy. 20 million a year? With the economy the way it is their should be a cap and a lot lower than anyone else.

If the Yanks head in the $300M range then it just proves that the current luxury tax rules don't work.
Still very funny when A-Rod starts topping grounders to short and their bullpen implodes every October.

The same was said in the NHL. everyone said the players union and sh!tbag commish would never allow it. Yea, it took an entire season canceled to get it done, but it's been well worth it. I mean, look, right now before the season even begins there are essentially the same 10 perennial teams that honestly have a chance at the WS crown.

People don't need $20 million to feed their families. They make so much money, they don't need it.

It will never happen. Owners mainly want to line their pockets and so do the players. So the current situation is best for both parties.

The economy being poor does not effect the Yankees this season. They just built an entirely new stadium and have already sold insane amounts of season tickets. Which means they'll sell insane amounts of concessions. They own the TV network that they play on so they retain every dollar rather than dishing some out to PeachTree TV or Fox Sports like most teams do. They keep making money, so the fact that America isn't doesn't really effect them.

Everyone already knows it does not work. They just do it so the league can get a little money out of teams have enough to spend.

One of my friends told me that they get $90,000,000 from YES TV or something like that. Thats just from YES, not including ticket sales or merchandise sales.

all of this money they are spending and receiving...and yet they're asking the city of New York to throw a little cash their way to help for New Yankee Stadium. same thing happening with the Mets...

I don't think they yankees will ever get to $300M payroll. They can get very close to it tho. I don't know if the yankees can go after BUrnett, Teix and also Manny from what I've read but I promise you next season Holiday and Lackey will be thrown a ridiclous amount of money to be yanks next season.
Yankees can make baseball not fun for anyone seriously.

Yeah I have, and on the contrary:
What a joke. Literally almost. There's nothing to do but laugh at the Yankee show right now. They are simply playing a different game than the rest of MLB.

The government should realize that new stadiums don't help the city at all. All that they help are the already wealthy teams. They don't create jobs, they just cost money for new exits off of the Major Deagan.
