View Full Version : Glavine to DL; career over?

Well, the Braves sent Glavine back to the DL today. He proved me wrong by pitching four horrible innings last night. I said he wouldn't pitch again, now I'm fairly confident he won't ... and if he does it'll just be for a farewell kind of thing near the end of the season.
The problem that Glavine's been going through was what started all of Hampton's injuries back in the day. Hampton tried to rest and then pitch a little later, much like Glavine did, and also like Glavine, was sent back to the disabled list soon after and then had surgery to fix the problem.
Glavine's going to have a hard time getting a contract with the way he's pitching, being 42 years old and coming off surgery. I don't think there's anyway he can come back for the long haul without surgery.
As far as Glavine goes, there have been some that have been very critical of his performance this year (myself included) and wanted no part of him coming back for 2009, but I don't think any of us would have wanted this to be the reason he didn't come back.
I feel bad for him if this is how his career ends. Going his entire career without going to the disabled list and then having a year that went like this.
I didn't want him back, I'm kind of happy it's looking like he won't be back, but this isn't anything close to how I wanted it to happen.
If this is it, thanks for everything Tom. I know you didn't want your final year in Atlanta to go this way either.
If this is the end it sucks that this is the way his last season had to go down. Nothing but mediocrity and injuries have put a real damper on the Glavine comeback/farewell season.

If he's finished, he had one heck of a career. I know a lot of people dislike him for his association with the strike of '94, but I prefer to look at him as part of perhaps the greatest trio of starters in the history of the game. I hope he's able to come back and make one last start this year, but if not, thanks for the memories, Tommy.

Hopefully he's not brought back next season. It would be nice to see him pitch one more time in September after saying he's going to retire after the season. Maybe the last home game of the year he starts and gets through five innings without giving up a run, walks off the field and tips is cap to the fans while receiving a standing ovation.

Poor Glavine, I love the guy and will never forget what he Smoltz, Chipper, Maddux, and COX have done for this franchise.

Sad news for Tom. At least he'll retire a Brave. Age and injuries caught up to him this year, and to an extent (much like Jordan retiring and coming back with the Wizards, at least for me) it hasn't been the same. You know he's a Brave, but...I haven't felt completely connected to him.
Braves need to go with Reyes the rest of the year, and maybe towards the end give a spot to Hanson or Parr. I refuse to say a injury to a HOF'er is a blessing, or what the team needed...but at least now Tom should realize he probably needs to shut it down and Wren knows, if he didn't before '09 won't include Glavine.

Unfortunately I think this just might be the end for Tom. If you're Tom Glavine its realistically not worth it to try and fight back from this. His body is clearly not up for it any more, and I don't see him as a real asset to the team anymore. Other than another ring what else does he have to prove? Despite all of that, its still sad to see such a legendary player not able to leave the game on his own terms.

 Bgarrett. You were right. I think Glavine is done, but he had a great career.

Heh. I've got a couple of those floating around too. It's sad to see it end like this, but this year shouldn't tarnish his career in any way to any of us. He was in a tough spot and just couldn't finish.

Bringing him back was a bad idea, and I've been pretty tough on it. But don't get me wrong, this was my favorite player growing up, losing him to the Mets made me want to cry, and I really wanted him to be successful this year. It's a shame it had to end like this but it's time to move on. Hopefully him and Maddux enter the Hall together in 2013, and Smoltz and Cox in 2014.

This blows.
It'd be nice to see him activated in September and put in the season finale so he can leave the right way. Like subbed in as a pinch hitter to lay down a sac bunt. It's probably a stretch and won't happen, but I think a player like him should leave on a good note and the response from the crowd after laying down the bunt would be amazing. Plus it'd be a sellout crowd to see Glavine's last game.

Unfortunately, I strongly doubt that. It's a decent idea though.

Ok, maybe a bit drastic (lol), but Atlanta would at least make more money than on every other average game with one of the greats leaving the game. It's not too many times that you can know that you're attending the last game of a future Hall of Famer before the game even starts.
