I've recently picked up the sticks again and being that it's summer time I have the itch to play some baseball. I've got a roster mod of the 2006 season and have attempted to do this before where I create some low ball prospects on the Pelicans. Basically anyone who played in the Braves system from Rookie Ball to Myrtle Beach during 2006 is fair game. They also must still be in the Braves system today (or exited the Braves' system via the Teixeira trade). I've constructed a roster of 27 players (2 "inactives" spotted at AA-Mississippi). I'm playing on MVP difficulty with adjusted sliders. Playing every game and only those at Myrtle Beach. If I deem a player is playing good enough for a call-up then so be it, he'll be promoted.
I believe that's that. Now here's to hoping I pick up a few readers and let's jump right into it.

April 3, 2006 - Kicking Off The 2006 Campaign
Well it's that time again. Time to lace of the cleats and prepare for another season of Pelicans' baseball. Last year we finished a disappointing 61-79 in my inaugural season as the Manager of the Pelicans. As I head out for the last at of Spring Training in my mind (as I've just been handed the High-A roster) I play through the possible lineups and strategies for the new crop of young ball players that make up our squad. My approach is to try and show these guys them I'm just another guy in the dugout, so I like to participate in BP and some throwing when I can. If anything seeing me hack at pitches will only provide these young guys with some more confidence as the guy after me gets to say, "Coach, let me show you how it's done."
It will be interesting to see how we fair this year with 11 new pitchers. That's right, we don't return one pitcher from last year. Well I guess you could count Gonzalo Lopez. He's been here before, but he's been battling arm injuries - Lopez starts off the year on the Disabled/Inactive List (go figure) with no time table as to when he'll return. I guess all-in-all this could be good for me as Manager as it's pretty unlikely any of these guys will pull a Chuck James and go from Myrtle Beach all the way to Atlanta in one season.
As for the bats and gloves, we'll surely miss Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Martin Prado. Though it's no shock losing two .300 hitters to Mississippi would put a dent in your lineup. Salty's got some real talent, but unless he's moved to 1B I don't see him sticking in Atlanta with that way that Brian McCann handled himself in his mid-season call-up last year. Unlike pitching here's where we return some familiar faces in our 2005 regulars; Diory Hernandez, Carl Loadenthal, and Mark Jurich. Also re-joining us with a taste of High-A in 2005 are; Van Pope, Brandon Jones, and Greg Creek. If you're doing the math, in total, that makes 21 out of the 27 players on the roster newcomers to the High-A life. Though Creek has been hampered by a knee injury and won't see the field to start off the season. Jones is a great talent, he's the real deal. He hit .350 for us in 60 at-bats and launched 8 home runs for Rome in 43 games. Does a bunch of fresh faces mean different results for Myrtle Beach?
I'm Matt Nikolaus and this is my story of the Myrtle Beach Pelicans. You can call me Nokes.

Looks good matty. I'll be following. Never really thought about trying a minor league one. I might just do it.

April 4, 2006 - Dissecting The Roster
I'll finally get a chance to see how this team responds to each other as a team tomorrow. We're heading to Myrtle Beach today on an off day. I sure hope these boys enjoy it while it lasts. Looking at the schedule, yikes! Three times during the season we play for three weeks or more without an off day. Luckily this isn't anything like the majors and the traveling isn't too far between each stop on road trips.
While I've got some time, let's have a look at our roster.

5. Mark Jurich [1B]

Projected Lineup Vs LHP

2. Diory Hernandez [SS]
3. Brandon Jones [LF]
4. Kala Ka'aihue [1B]
5. Eric Campbell [DH]
6. Jon Owings [RF]
7. Matt Young [2B]
8. Van Pope [3B]
9. Clint Sammons [C]
Remaining Bench
Tyler Flowers [C/1B]
Elvis Andrus [SS]
Jordan Schafer [OF]
-----
The lineup is strong top to bottom. Matt Young would be in the 1 or 2 hole on most any other teams. Brandon Jones is a player to watch. He put up strong numbers last year and he could jettison through the system very quickly. Kala Ka'aihue provides a ton of power, but has the tendency to strikeout a bit too much. The bench provides the Pelicans with good depth. Many scouts are raving of 16 year-old Elvis Andrus. He's very mature for his age and reminds a lot of a young Derek Jeter. Jordan Schafer could probably start for any of the other Carolina League teams somewhere in the Outfield.
Rotation
1. Matt Harrison
2. James Parr
3. Jo-Jo Reyes
4. Tommy Hanson
5. Charlie Morton
Bullpen
Kris Medlen [CL]
Beau Jones [MRP]
Dustin Evans [MRP]
Jeff Lyman [MRP]
Kevin Gunderson [Lefty]
Jairo Cuevas [LRP]
Inactive/Disabled List
Greg Creek [1B/3B]
Gonzalo Lopez [RHP]
-----
Inexperience surrounds the pitching staff, but that doesn't leave them short of talented young prospects by any means. Matt Harrison and James Parr both have great control and look to anchor the rotation. Tommy Hanson could be one heck of a steal out of the 22nd round a year ago. He simply knows how to pitch and isn't afraid to challenge hitters. Many wonder if Kris Medlen's success is due to the fact that he is ahead of the age curve. Either way his dominating performance last season at Danville is very impressive. Kevin Gunderson is an interesting prospect. He doesn't throw real hard and his ceiling isn't thought of to be very high either. But he locates his pitches very well and keeps batters off balanced with his 3/4 delivery.

Matt Harrison pitched a beautiful 7.2 innings, only allowing five hits. Brandon Jones got things rolling in the top of the 1st inning with a towering 2-out HR that measured over 400 feet. Two innings later Jones would drive in Van Pope for his second RBI of the game. Pope would also add an RBI of his own in the 7th. Kris Medlen closed the door in the ninth, striking out two Blue Rocks to notch his first of hopefully many saves for Myrtle Beach.

Game Recap
So close, but Myrtle Beach let one slip away. Christian Lara got the scoring going as he sent a James Parr curve over the right-centerfield wall in the 3rd inning. Brandon Jones came up clutch as two innings later he'd smack a 2 RBI double to left-center to grab the lead. After committing two costly errors in the 7th that accounted for two runs and a lead change the Pelicans would battle back to send the game into extra innings. Jeff Lyman came in to pitch a great three innings of relief, striking out three and only surrendering one hit. In the 11th frame an unlikely hero in Luis Soto lined a fastball up the middle and Mickey Hall just beat out Carl Loadenthal's throw to the plate.

Game Recap
Jo-Jo Reyes pitched a solid game, but Andrew Dobies was even better. He kept batters off balanced all night with his deceptive changeup. Dobies sent nine Pelicans back to the bench with nothing to show while only allowing six hits and going for the complete game shutout. First Baseman Scott White paced the Blue Rock offense going 4-for-4 with two doubles and three RBI. Dustin Evans got shelled in his one inning of work, allowing three runs and White's second double which ended any comeback hope Myrtle Beach had in the 9th.

Game Recap
Tommy Hanson pitched almost too fine tonight. He was pitching well enough to go longer, but was tired due to setting up batters and making them look foolish. In six innings of work Hanson only allowed five hits, striking out two, and didn't walk a batter. Brandon Jones stayed hot, hitting his second home run to give the Pelicans the early 1-0 lead. Jairo Cuevas pitched an excellent two innings of relief. In fact you might say his only bad pitch on the night was the lone single he gave up. Mark Jurich kept the 9th inning alive with a two out base hit. Elvis Andrus came in to pinch run while with a hit-and-run put on Matt Young doubled in Andrus. Diory Hernadez would give drive in Young three pitches later, give Myrtle Beach a three run cushion. Though Kris Medlen really only needed Jones' dinger as he breezed through the Blue Rocks to close out the game.

Gene Kinsale owned Charlie Morton, hitting two home runs and collecting four RBI off of the righty and went 3-for-5 on the day in total (not sure why Kingsale was in Single-A). In total Morton got rocked to a tune of 12 hits and ten earned runs in 4.2 innings. Kala Ka'aihue would ignite a two out, three run rally in the 9th with a solo homer, but by that point the game was far from reachable.

Game Recap
The Pelicans wasted no time in returning the favor from yesterday's ball game as they put up an eight spot on the score board in the first inning that was capped off by a bases clearing double by Diory Hernandez. Hernandez led Myrtle Beach, going 3-for-4 with four RBI and two doubles before being removed from the game. Also contributing a multi-hit game were Carl Loadenthal, Jon Owings (two 2Bs), and Tyler Flowers. Matt Harrison found trouble twice in the ball game, but the first inning cushion was more than enough for Manager Matty Nokes to have no worries and let Harrison work through it for Harrison's second victory.

Pelicans' hitters were just too impatient today as they wound up striking out 11 times! It wasn't that Bunn's stuff was that overpowering, like said, Myrtle Beach was simply free swinging at the plate. James Parr pitched a solid game and his only mishap was giving up Gene Kingsale's 4th homer of the season in the 6th inning. Combing the mental mistakes on the base paths with the strikeouts and the Pelicans really had no chance.

Game Recap
In what was a pitcher's duel for most of the game, the Pelicans would implode in the 9th with a 2-0 lead. The game started off with Rhadames Liz having control problems and Jo-Jo Reyes was just cruising - Reyes fanned eight batters on the day. Once Liz found his control, it was lights out with his 95 MPH heater. Matt Young would reach on a bunt single and advanced all the way to third base on the over throw to first. Clint Sammons drove him in on a one out Sac Fly later in the inning. Going into the 9th Reyes was obviously tiring, but still competing to finish his three hit shutout. With a runner on first and one out Brandon Berger sent the 2-1 pitch from Reyes over the left field wall. In comes Kris Medlen, but he couldn't hold the game at a 2-2 tie as he would give up a two run jack of his own to Bryan Bass. That seemed to suck all the life out of Myrtle Beach as they went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the 9th.

Game Recap
In a game of the long ball it was Jarod Rine's 2 RBI inside the park job that was the deciding factor. Tommy Hanson missed with a change-up and the sub-.100 hitting Rine smacked it into the left-center gap. The ball took a weird hop off the wall that left Carl Loadenthal scrambling to try to get the ball back in the infield to at least hold Rine to a triple, but it was too late. Kala Ka'aihue (3) and Van Pope (1) would each add a homer in the game as well.

Game Recap
Charlie Morton sure kept us on the edge of our seats by giving up a two run shot to Brandon Berger to tie the game in the 6th. But with two runners on Clint Sammons came up clutch in the bottom of the inning - driving in two runs on a double. Brandon Jones got back on track with a three hit game, including a home run. Elvis Andrus added his first hit and the Pelican's first triple on the year.
