i knew the braves would win in a blow out, after two close losses the braves always blow out the team the last day especially on the road.

PeytonAllen
05-29-2008, 03:31 PM
Not at all. I'm happy for him. I wish he'd do it more often. I'd much rather the Braves be successful than me be right.

Surrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrre you do. :)

I hope he picks it up. You can see him just being weighed down by the weight of expectations.

I'm well aware of that GMB but with our team not hitting a lick all series till that inning, I'm with the school of thought that says get as many runs as you can when you've got the chance. With that said it worked out fine with Corky hitting but I'd have made that move.

And Campillo gives up his first run as a starter. Thank goodness we got those five runs.

I've always had an unhealthy obsession with Russ Branyan. Maybe it's the Rob Deer type numbers, I don't know, I've always liked him though.

I think if you do that, you could have Corky start again tomorrow and have McCann take him out for his 2nd at bat again. That way each would get a full game, but then you risk possibly getting Brian injured with no backup.

did the braves sign him to like a minor league deal a year or two ago?

Jsh1284
05-29-2008, 03:39 PM
They did. He played third in Spring Training in like 04 or 05 but he didn't make the cut.

Yeah. He got cut in spring training. He was with us the same year Matthews Jr. was. They both got cut.

The site isnt working well for me for some reason. I'm having connection issues. Keeps giving me an error when I post .. like half the time. That's annoying.I think that's something local. The site/server isn't causing that. It's not running at it's fastest speed, but it's not lagging much and certainly isn't giving any indication it would be giving any 404 errors.

Jsh1284
05-29-2008, 03:47 PM
I wish I could say that, JC. However... heh.

Even though we lost two games this series I think we can rest easy because our pitching has been there all three games so far. We're GOING to start winning on the road and winning these one run games eventually if our pitching stays this solid all year.

Edit: Yeah Mc I think it's on my end. I think someone is messing with my connection. Either that or our ISP is having a fit because it's been like this for two days now.

McCarroll21

Brewers production out of the 1 and 2 spots this year...

Batting 1st - .210/.329/.362 - .691 OPS
Batting 2nd - .240/.288/.430 - .717 OPS

I know we've had some problems with the leadoff spot, but think about if we had these problems?

you guys think there is any chance with smoltz and co. coming back to the pen that we could package Boyer and Ring in a deal to get a good bat off the bench. Teams need relief pitching and would def a lefty who can get lefties out and Boyer was rumored before the season as a target by some other teams.

you guys think there is any chance with smoltz and co. coming back to the pen that we could package Boyer and Ring in a deal to get a good bat off the bench. Why would we want another bat on the bench? We have a good bench (just not when we're having to play them in starting roles).

We just designated a damn good bat because he didn't have a spot on our bench.

lavell12
05-29-2008, 04:40 PM

no we designated him b/c he doesn't have a position. i'm saying boyer will be like our 5th or 6th best reliever. i think a good pinch hitter has more value than a 5th or 6th reliever.

Nasadega
05-29-2008, 04:42 PM

ya but boyer will be resorting to mop up duty with acosta, soriano, smoltz, and gonzo infront of him.

So What that's pretty nasty mop-up duty 30 K to 8 BB. Boyer's for real. I'll let him be our 5th inning guy, Acosta 6th, 7-8th for Gonzalez and Soriano and 9th for Smoltz, and then Bennett can bounce around and do long relief and prevent people from pitching back to back days and generally be Jeff Bennett. There's no such thing as too much pitching depth.

Boyer can mop up and pick up all those comeback wins will get win we score 10 runs a game throughout July.

Chief Knockahoma
05-29-2008, 04:47 PM

lavell12
05-29-2008, 04:48 PM
I think a good bench player will be needed more than a 5th inning guy (if there is such a thing). Plus Boyer isn't a long reliever that is Bennett.

This isn't a critism of Boyer here is just that he won't be needed as much as a good bat.

McCarroll21
05-29-2008, 04:48 PM

Boyer's saved Acosta this year, too. Boyer's thrown 5.1 innings in his last four appearances in the last six games. He's pitched in 29 games now.

Boyer's fine. He's getting over worked, but the fact Bobby's gone to him more times than anyone else in the pen should say something.

Where does a good bat fit on the bench? Where will he be used that Norton and Gotay wouldn't? We just need a left fielder so we can use our bench as a bench instead of starting one of them out in left field.

What are you talkin about, man? Acosta is the odd man out in the pen when the big 3 get back. He's got options and Boyer has been just as impressive as Acosta. We'll keep Boyer as our 6th inning guy .. and that's the right move.

I would like a good right handed bat off the bench, Norton and Gotay are better lefty, Corky can't hit and if Diaz is in LF we don't have another Right handed bat.

You really think it's more important to have some guy trying to have little impact on a game every 57th game than a closer-type pitcher pitching the 6th inning?

I'm not sure if the Boyer/Acosta argument is going to be put to bed any time soon but the numbers certainly weigh in Boyer's favor thus far.

Coming into today...

Acosta- 25.7 IP, 22H, 3HR, 15K, 12BB
Boyer- 30.7 IP, 25H, 2HR, 30K, 8BB

How did Soriano look, anyone get his top velocity?

McCarroll21
05-29-2008, 07:53 PM
They talked on Braves Live after the game about Campillo's blisters. Supposedly the one on his middle finger did start to open back up. He didn't act like it was something that'd prevent him from making his next start.

The guns were off today. Sometimes they'd be +3-4 from the stadium gun and sometimes they'd be -3-4 from the stadium gun.

Gameday shows him around 92-94 with the fastball and his three sliders were 86, 83, 83. His first fastball was 91, but after throwing a few pitches he was consistent at 93, 94.

And even with an average that high, Chipper was still able to raise it to .420 today. Yeah, he's smokin'.

Randy Johnson has tied Clemens for #2 all-time on the strikeout list. He'll have to wait for his next start to get it. I think they said his next one would come in Milwaukee, so do Weeks or Cameron strikeout to give Randy sole possession of second?

Yeah, Cameron and Weeks are dying to be the answer to an esoteric sports-trivia question, becoming to Johnson a poor man's version of what Downing is to Hank!
