That's just something that doesn't sound right. Watch out for KC, Dayton is going to do some wonderful things over there...

5 year deal, pending a physical. No money reported. It said they were talking about a 4/45.

Edit: I would like to say that they did overpay drastically, but who hasn't overpaid for pitching this off-season that has actually gotten it. I like Meche, I'm not sure if he's worth the type of money they're talking, but I don't think Lilly is worth $10-11M either and some (not here, in internet land) said that was a good deal.

-------------------------

KC also drafted Joakim Soria with the 2nd pick in the Rule V draft today. Soria is 8-0 with 64 strikeouts in 62 1/3 innings, yielding just 46 hits (.204 opponents' batting average) and 19 walks in the Mexican Winter League.

I would trade JS and two draft picks for Dayton Moore, NFL style (Jon Gruden, anyone?) but Bud is too snobby to let that happen... We should have found some way to hold on to him, because despite the wishy-washyiness of what we see here, that man is a genius.

When Moore left the Braves to go to the Royals I was very afraid that we would be losing a great successor to JS but can ANYONE please explain Moore giving Gil Meche a 5 year 55 million dollar deal? Is it too late for me to be an average MLB pitcher?

stupid signing...not only how much they gave him, but the fact that they gave him a 5 year deal...

i guess they gotta try to do something to generate some interest in Kansas City, but i don't think Gil Meche will do it.

Originally when it was a 4 year deal it looked a little better. The money isn't good, but Dayton is trying. He was told they'd up payroll, and he's using it.

I think he'll do a lot of good things, the Bannister trade and drafting Soria will prove to be good moves.

He doesn't mave much of a track record right now, but the length of the deal isn't worth it.

He may be hoping he gives him a good half year and trades him to someone desperate for pitching at the deadline, but that's what makes the 5th year so stupid.

And the fact they got Ryan Shealy for nothing was a coup. Dayton Moore may have the Royals in the World Series before JS gets the Braves back there, if he ever does.

More Royals stuff...

From Rotoworld:
Octavio Dotel and the Royals have reportedly agreed to a one-year, $5 million contract.
Dotel, who will go into the closer's role, can make an extra $2 million in incentives. A healthy Dotel is a terrific reliever, but he showed little last season after returning from Tommy John surgery. It's another risky pickup for a Royals team still likely to finish in fifth place, but this one won't hurt in 2008 and beyond if it doesn't work out.

you have to over pay to get players to go to KC.

Dayton is taking on the formula that we did in 1991. He's going to go aggressively after free agents and make trades to replenish their farm system. He's trying to prove to those of KC that he's serious about winning so they'll show up at the ballpark, so he'll go out and bring in all this talent that may or may not pan out, hoping it does.

Lonnie Smith, anyone?

Dayton Moore...is going to go down as the "one that got away." Not Andruw or any other free agent, but Moore. God, why did JS have to stick around this long? He better pull off a great deal to with the Soriano one and not rest on one good trade.

Any chance Moore comes back in a few years when JS retires? I mean seriously, KC is beyond any hope, even if Moore is a genius, especially with the Twins, White Sox and (maybe, not quite sold long term on these guys) Tigers in division. Maybe he stays there and practices then we bring him back, maybe give him some big money as incentive (honestly, I would rather see teams sink 5-10 million into a really good GM than a sadly mediocre pitcher)?
