View Full Version : Remembering your fondest Braves Memories

I know the Braves have been playing awful lately (I know that's an understatement), but since we're all loyal Braves fans around here, we take the sad days with the happy days. So, let's share our fondest Braves memories with each other, but with one catch: These memories can't involve post season games, since pretty much everyone's fondest memories come from post season games (ie. game 7 '92 NLCS, game 6 '95 WS).
I'll start this one off, here's a few memorable games I'll never forget:
5/19/07 - Braves beat the Red Sox 14-0, I was there at Fenway Park on that rainy night back in May of last year! It was really nice cuz I sat next to another Braves fan. John Smoltz allowed only three hits through 7 innings and of course, I got to see Chipper clear the fence.
7/2/04 - Braves beat the Red Sox in extra innings thanks to a walk-off home run from rookie Nick Green. I'll admit the Braves were doing so terrible midway through the '04 season that on this Friday night I went out clubbing with a friend instead of watching the game. Sometime between 11 and midnight we left the night club and I turned on the radio expecting to hear the post game so I could catch the final score and turn it off. Well, the Braves were still playing cuz the game went into extra innings! I'm so glad we left the night club when we did cuz less than five minutes after turning the game on, Nick Green hits a walk-off home run!
9/21/99 - Braves beat the Mets 2-1 down the home stretch of the season. Both runs were compliments of solo HRs from Chipper - one from each side of the plate!

I was there also, KJ almost cycled and Diaz hit one off the billboard over the monster. The best part of that game was seing how diehard the Sox fans actually are. They stayed the whole game chanting "Lets go Sox!!!" in the 9th.

Haha, yeah, I was chanting "Lets go Sox" in the 9th too...but they all knew I was being sarcastic...just like how they mock the tomahawk chop. Many fans did leave that game. Were you there for the first game of the doubleheader? That one was a disaster so I had to buy tickets to the second game cuz I wanted to leave seeing the Braves win a game.

No, I had tickets for friday night and it got rained out so I had to stay over my friends house in Rhode Island. The first game we got owned, I think Lerew started, or maybe Carlyle. It was terrible either way, Redman got his last inning as a Brave that day, so maybe it wasn't so bad.

I remember the game winning grand slam Marcus Giles hit off of Mike Hampton; then he was sent down the next day!!
Can't help but fondly remember Andres Galarraga and his return from cancer.
John Smoltz and his 3000th strikeout.
Any number of Andruw Jones defensive plays.
Frenchy throwing out Gonzalez twice at the plate was classic.
Frenchy's game winning grand slam off of Chad Cordero was a nice one as well.
Mike Hampton and his.....er....well I guess there is nothing fond about the Mike Hampton experiance!

He did make some nice contributions in the '03 and '04 NLDS...ehhh, that pretty much sums up all he's done as a Brave :(

How bout the game from summer of '99 when Andruw hit a 3-run shot off Mariano Rivera in the 9th to give the Braves their second win of the season vs. the Yankees...the Braves had LOADS of last at-bat wins in '99.

My favorite would probably be the first game I actually went to. It was in St. Louis in '96 and the immortal Brad Woodall was on the mound for the Braves. Javy Lopez and Mark Whiten both homered for the Braves and I remember thinking how badly I wanted to be sitting closer to center field so I could chase down those home run balls. lol

Mine has to be 2 years ago in St. Louis, the year the Cardinals won it all. I was there for the rubber game of a 3 game stint, and the Braves unloaded on the redbirds. Hudson threw well and we won 14-4. The best part was listening to all the Braves fans on the Cardinals call in show after the game
A few years ago I went to one of the last games for the Expos at Turner Field. It was back when Smoltz was closing and I distinctly remember hearing "Thunderstruck" and watching Smoltzie top 100MPH. Thats my moment.

I guess my memory from a game would have to be the game where Paul Byrd had a perfect game going for about 5 innings and Andruw Jones hit a homerun.

The first game after we traded for McGriff from the Padres.
That was bad ass.

The Braves slaughtering the Rockies 12-3 to win the East in 2005, my first postseason as a Braves fan.
McCann's three run shot off Clemens for the first and only playoff win I've seen so far (ugh)
Other than that, Frenchy's slam against Cordero to win it, boy did I yell when he hit it :D

I've got a few that I want to add...
In person:
Games in St. Louis where Andruw played Edmonds to be a fool. I normally sit in the outfield when I go to St. Louis and all the guys were all over Andruw and he just turns and smiles after making an awesome catch.
Still in St. Louis, Andruw dancing along with a song the crowd in the outfield bleachers were singing.
In Atlanta, my 21st birthday, John Smoltz 50th complete game.
In Atlanta, the day before the last, I tell my friend that Andruw is about to end the game with a homer ... and he does. We walk off in style.
In St. Louis, Cardinals fans all over J.D. Drew and he promptly shuts them up with a mammoth of a homer. Then does it again the next day.
Being right behind home plate when Mark Teixeira made his first appearance in a Braves uniform (in the dugout the day of the trade, didn't appear in the game).

In person: Braves beat Houston 16-1 including an inning with four homers, after the third Damian Berryhil hit one to the warning track but then the next guy went yard. I was really young, I think the HRs were hit by Gant, Blousser, Justice, and Fred.

July, 25, 1992 - Otis Nixon robs Andy Van Slyke's homerun ball to help seal a win over the Pirates - and, more importantly, extend the Braves current winning streak to 13 games, which tied a club record. This was very memorable for me, because I happened to be in Atlanta that week with my family visiting relatives.
I actually went to my first Braves game the following day. Unfortunately, the Braves winning streak came to an end.....but that's a different story.

July 4th several years ago. Me and one of my friends met some of my family members in ATL to catch a game. I wore a John Rocker jersey to antagonize the crowd. We were hammered by the 7th inning. At stretch time we ordered 4 beers each. (Because they quit selling at this time) At the end of the game was of course the fireworks show for the 4th. My friend and I were laying down in the courtyard in front of the Braves Clubhouse watching the show and drinking the rest of our beer. We met my family at the car to leave. One of my family members saw what a good time we were having and decided she wanted some liquor. We were waiting in line at this time in the car. My friend spies a liquor store and jumps out of the car to go make her purchase. He comes back opens the bottle and takes a shot. She asked him if he was not going to mix it. So he grabs her Coke, takes another shot, takes a drink of Coke and shakes his head and replied, Now its mixed.
I don't remember who won, who we played or any of that trivial stuff. All I know is that we had a great time and have had many like this. Good times......

I went to my first Braves game when I was six months old, so I can't use that as my favorite. But there have been a few great games in my life.
-There was a game where my father caught a homerun ball from Sammy Sosa and the woman sitting behind us grabbed it out of his hand (this was the year following the homerun chase).
-I went to a game and had a blind man sitting behind us with his dog and a friend who was calling the game for him. The dude was as good at calling games as anyone else I've heard.
-The first game I went to when Smoltz was in the pen. When he walked out to close the game, the crowd went wild and there just seemed to be a feeling that we were going to win this game.
-Ryan Klesko hit (at that time) the longest homerun at Turner field. It was hit in the bullpen (it was only a couple feet away!) and I was jumping up and down. That was also the first time I saw myself acting like a jackass on SportsCenter.

Oh, regarding the Klesko home run: Was it against the D-backs in '99? If so, I remember that one too!

Those are some nice games you've been to.
J.D. Drew had his best career year in '04 - his only year as a Brave. He has a tendency to beat up on his old teams. I believe he hit two home runs against the Braves last year.
I remember seeing Andruw hit a grand slam against the Red Sox at Fenway in '97 - my first Braves game in person, which officially made me a Braves fan for life! (Not cuz they won, but cuz something just clicked.)

LOL! Pretty much the same here ... except a kid in Jonesboro, AR. It was either the Braves or Cubs for me growing up.

My first ever game at Turner Field: I got to see Smoltz and Randy Johnson pitch during Labor Day Weekend 1999. I was actually able to go into the D'Back's press box and meet Thom Brenaman (son of Reds Legend Marty). A really great experience. Topped only by....
Game 1 of the 1999 World Series at the Ted. Even though the Braves lost that game it was still amazing to be there for the first game of the Series.

Watching Maddux pitch on TBS at 7PM, and watching Chipper homer on a first pitch fastball in the first. Can't get any better.
